5 Fun Things To Do This Weekend In The South Suburbs

Chicago's south suburbs offer a variety of events over the first weekend in June.

SOUTH SUBURBS -- The first weekend of June means summer has officially begun. There’s no shortage of fun things to do outside during the month, which starts out with these five good possibilities from throughout the land of south suburban Chicago.

‘Horsey Fun Night’: A horse-centric night at the Illinois Horse Rescue Facility of Will County, 3751 W. Church Road in Beecher will begin Friday at 5 p.m. with a tour of the facility and an introduction to all rescue animals there. Attendees will learn how to groom and saddle a horse. There will also be a short demo of lunging and desensitizing a horse. Attendees will also be given the opportunity to ride a horse. No experience necessary. A minimum donation of $30 is required, with all proceeds going to care for rescue animals. Reserve your spot by calling 708-258-3959.

Frankfort Community Sale: Nearly 100 homes will participate in a community-wide garage sale in Frankfort from 9 a.m. through 3 p.m. on Saturday. For a complete list of homes participating, check the Frankfort Park District Facebook page after 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Dragon Boat Festival: The second annual Chicago Southland Dragon Boat Festival is Saturday at MWRD SEPA Waterfall & Park along the Cal-Sag Channel in Blue Island. Registration begins at 8 a.m., with races set to go at 9 a.m.

Orland Days: Entertainment and fun is packed in during the five-day festival near the Metra station in Orland Park. This year’s events have the theme of the 100th anniversary of the Lions Club and will culminate on Sunday with a parade.

Running for Hope 5K: Proceeds from this run that starts near 95th and Keeler in Oak Lawn go to benefit the Ronald McDonald House near Advocate Children’s Hospital and Advocate Children’s Hospital in Oak Lawn. The 5K run/walk starts at 8 a.m. A kids dash will follow at 9:30 a.m.
