Blue Island Man, 57, Arrested In Burglary At Pop's Italian Beef: Tinley PD

The man had a sledgehammer, screwdriver, and cash on him when caught, police said.

TINLEY PARK, IL — A Blue Island man has been charged with felony burglary after a break-in at Pop's Italian Beef last week, Tinley Park Police said Tuesday.

Tinley Park police officers responded at 10:17 p.m. to a burglar alarm at Pop’s, 7301-A W. 183rd St.and saw a man dressed in dark clothing and wearing a mask walking near the business. When an officer attempted to make contact, the man fled on foot toward the Hamada parking lot. Police caught up with him after a brief foot chase, and a physical struggle ensued.

Assisting units, including plainclothes officers from the Chicago Police Department who were in the area, responded to the scene and helped take the man into custody. During the arrest, officers recovered a handheld sledgehammer, a screwdriver, and U.S. currency believed to be connected to the incident.

The suspect, identified as Mark J. Zbroszczyk, 57, was charged with felony burglary, possession of burglary tools, and resisting arrest. While in custody, Zbroszczyk admitted to his involvement in the Pop’s burglary. Police discovered Zbroszczyk also was wanted in connection with multiple burglaries in Chicago's 22nd District.

Zbroszczyk was taken to the Tinley Park Police Department for processing and later taken to Silver Cross Hospital for medical evaluation.
