Red Light Cameras Could Soon Be Gone In Tinley Park
"I feel like the red light cameras should be eliminated," Trustee Mike Glotz said.
TINLEY PARK, IL — Red light cameras in Tinley Park could be eliminated if plans from one of the village trustees come to fruition. Trustee Mike Glotz asked the village attorney during a special village board meeting last week to look into the possibility of the village canceling its red light camera contract with SafeSpeed, LLC.
"I think the red light cameras have been extremely burdensome for our residents," Glotz said. "I feel the red light cameras should be eliminated."
Right now there are three red light camera locations in Tinley Park: 159th and Harlem, 171st and Harlem and 183rd and Harlem. The one at 183rd Street in particular has been an issue, Glotz said during the meeting.

"The cameras were supposed to be for the safety of the village, but I feel the benefit has been minuscule when residents feel they are being penalized for rolling right turns on red," he said.
About 400 tickets from the cameras are written a week, according to police. According to Glotz, that time and effort could be better spent.

"I would like to make Tinley Park a red light (camera) free zone," he said, adding that there are several other possible ways to make up for the loss of revenue.
Police Chief Matthew Walsh agreed, stating that there are no statistics that show the cameras improve safety in the village and called them "just a revenue generator."
