History & Heritage: Tinley Park's First Library

Take a walk down Oak Park Avenue at the turn of the last century.

Between the Funk general store and the Andres Block building in this photo from around 1914 is the site of Tinley Park's first public library.

This first library apparently was short-lived. For many years we did not know anything about this library other than its presence in this photo. It was primarily driven by the efforts of Mrs. Mary Fulton, a teacher in the local school.

The Tinley Park Dramatic Club under her guidance performed plays to raise money for the library. In this photo, the library is located in the former office of Christian Andres, Sr. The Andres family, who owned the building, graciously provided the space to accommodate the library.
