2 Rescued After Canoe Capsizes in Vernon Hills Lake

Neither of the men was wearing a life jacket at the time and the water temperature was only 60 degrees.

VERNON HILLS, IL -- Two men were rescued from Lake Charles in the Gregg's Landing subdivision in Vernon Hills on Tuesday morning. The Countryside Fire Protection District was called to the scene after their canoe capsized at about 9:45 a.m. Neither of the young men were wearing life jackets at the time and the water temperature was about 60 degrees, according to a news release from the Countryside Fire Protection District.

One of the men managed to call 911 while clinging onto the canoe, according to the news release.

Countryside Fire Protection District deployed its water rescue response, which includes an ambulance, fire engine, boat, hovercraft and the dive team. Neighboring fire department divers and boats were summoned as part of the full water rescue response.

The men were both safely rescued from the water and are in good condition, according to the news release.

Fire officials are reminding residents to wear life jackets at all times when boating.
