Volleyball Coach Secretly Filmed Student: Police

MUNDELEIN, IL — A high school volleyball coach in Mundelein is charged with a felony after he took photos and videos of a juvenile student, according to police.

Dagoberto Diaz, 48, of Mundelein, is charged with one count of unauthorized video recording of a juvenile, a Class 3 felony, police said Wednesday.

Law enforcement was alerted Aug. 18 by school officials that a student had reported that Diaz, who is the Mundelein High School junior varsity volleyball coach, had taken her into a room to do stretching and jumping exercises, and had been holding a cellphone that flashed, leading the student to believe Diaz was photographing her, according to police.

A search warrant for and forensic analysis of Diaz’s cellphone revealed several images and videos that corroborated the student’s suspicion, police said. On Tuesday, a search warrant was executed at Diaz’s home and he was taken into custody at a family member’s Mundelein residence and brought to jail pending a first appearance hearing, according to police.

Diaz is also a teacher at Carl Sandburg Middle School, police said.

“The Mundelein Police Department would like to thank the students involved for having the courage to come forward with the suspicious circumstances,” police said Wednesday in a news release.
