Recovery Management Helps Achieve Long-Term Recovery
Addiction cannot be cured; it must be treated, managed and monitored long-term.

Although substance use disorders are widely recognized as chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, they are still too often treated as an acute condition.
“Addiction is life-long and treatment is brief,” explains Robert DuPont, M.D., President of the Institute of Behavior and Health. “We need to shift our thinking about treatment from the current focus on short-term episodes to long-term recovery management.
Take someone with diabetes, for example. We don’t just give them their insulin, tell them to eat right and exercise, and send them on their way. The patient creates a treatment plan with his doctor, receives counseling on how to lead a healthy lifestyle, and has regular follow-up appointments to monitor his health and make sure the treatment plan is working. Relapses, such as a rise or fall in blood sugar, aren’t viewed as failure, but rather as a normal part of their disease.

Addiction treatment needs to work the same way. Like diabetes, addiction cannot be cured; it must be treated, managed and monitored long-term. In fact, research indicates that individuals who remain involved in some type of recovery program for at least a year have improved outcomes.
At Kiva Recovery, we strongly believe that support doesn’t end with treatment. Which is why we offer clients Recovery Management coaching services to support their efforts to manage their recovery process --- and maintain a life free from addiction. The program recognizes the many internal and external resources each client has at her/his disposal and also identifies areas that need additional support as clients move into a culture of recovery.

The Recovery Management Program is comprised of an assessment of a client’s recovery capital followed by the development of a Recovery Plan with their counselor. Upon their discharge from primary treatment, an assigned “recovery coach” will call clients monthly for recovery check-ups, coaching and, if necessary, linking them to communities of recovery and other recommended professional services. These check-ups occur monthly for the first year following primary treatment IOP or PHP treatment.
Addiction recovery is truly is a lifelong journey, but you’re not alone. Kiva Recovery is committed to supporting you every step of the way.
