Special Olympics Team Recognized for Accomplishments

The team was among 120 students recognized at the Community High School District 128 Board meeting May 30.

Amidst the multitude of student recognitions that took place at Tuesday night's Community High School District 128 Board meeting, there was one particularly enthusiastic group.

Members of the Special Olympics team, representing Libertyville and Vernon Hills High Schools, received certificates recognizing their achievements during the 2011-12 school year.

"We had a great year," said Coach Andy Compton. "Thank you, guys. Awesome, awesome year."

Compton said the school year started with basketball from November to March. The 17 athletes from the junior varsity and varsity basketball teams qualified for the state tournament in March, finishing third and fourth, respectively, Compton said.

Then, 12 athletes qualified for the Winter Games, held in Galena.

"They brought home a plethora of medals from that," said Compton.

For example, Thomas Howard placed first in the Snowshoe 100m and Snowshoe 200m races. Chris DeRose placed second in the Snowshoe 100m and first in the Snowshoe 50m, and Trevor Fuhrman placed first in the Snowshoe 400m race.

Compton said the Special Olympics team garnered 90 medals this year, including 39 gold medals. Eight athletes are headed to the Special Olympics Illinois Summer Games, slated for June 15-17 in Normal.

"They did awesome this year," said Compton. "They continue to amaze me and the other coaches."

The team includes: Eduardo Aguilar, Wadud Anthony, John Cerve, Chris DeRose, Trevor Fuhrman, Ellie Goldberg, Eric Haderlein, Sierra Hodges, Michael Ivers, Annie Jennings, Austin Josenhans, Vinnie Licocci, Mallory Marvin, Val Paykina, Michelle Shepley, Laura Steen, Nick Zaccari, Thomas Howard and Francisco Pita, Jr.

Associate Superintendent Al Fleming took a moment to recognize Compton, who was one of nine recipients of the 2011 Maggiano's Hero Award in 2011 for his support of Special Olympics Illinois.
