Before Casey's Market, Western Springs Had Henrikson's

Shopping in the Village in 1926; the Casey's site has been a market for over a century.

While Western Springs residents did not have Casey's Market available in 1926, another grocery and meat market occupied a portion of that site from 1907 until 1954.

Henrikson's market first opened in 1896 on the northwest corner of Hillgrove Avenue and Wolf Road. In 1907, Mr. Henrikson built a new building at 915 Burlington, where Casey's is located today.

The photo above shows how the Henrikson store appeared in 1926.  In 1954, the store was sold to Brinker's, which also operated a meat and food market. In 1977, Casey's acquired the property, expanding it over time.

A replica of Henrikson's original store can be viewed on the second floor of the Western Springs Historical Society's museum, which is located in the Village's historic water tower. The museum is open on Saturdays, 10 a.m. to noon, or by special appointment. Admission is free.
