Jury Duty Scam In Western Springs Reported

The caller demands immediate payment of a significant fine, police said.

WESTERN SPRINGS, IL – Western Springs police said Friday they have received several reports of scammers targeting residents about supposed jury duty.

According to a new release, residents get calls from what appears to be a number in "Western Springs, IL," with the caller purporting to be a Western Springs police sergeant.

The caller warns residents about their failure to appear for jury duty, police said. The fake sergeant then requests immediate payment of a significant fine for the supposed infraction.

Western Springs police said they do not make such calls. They do not call residents by phone for incidents about jury duty, nor would they demand immediate payment, the news release said.

If you receive such a call, the village advises you to hang up immediately and report it to the police department's non-emergency line at 708-246-8540.

"Be suspicious of anyone who reaches out by phone demanding immediate payment for any kind of infraction," the police department said. "Always attempt to verify the information by hanging up and calling a verified source or go in person to the location – such as the bank or police station."

Last month, Western Springs police reported an incident in which a resident received a call from a person posing as a Hinsdale police officer. The scammer demanded $8,000 for failing to appear for jury duty. The resident paid the money, police said.
