LTHS Dance Canceled After Post-Game Fight: Official

Guns were found on South Campus following the school's game with Proviso West, superintendent says.

WESTERN SPRINGS, IL – Lyons Township High School canceled its homecoming dance Saturday after a fight followed its football game and guns were found on the South Campus, the superintendent said in a statement.

The Western Springs Police Department forwarded the school's message to media, saying the statement was made in consultation with the police.

About 4:15 p.m., police were called to a “physical altercation” after Lyons Township’s game with Proviso West. They also received a report of a weapon on campus, Superintendent Brian Waterman said.

Police found an unoccupied car on the South Campus parking lot that contained what appeared to be two handguns under the driver’s and front passenger’s seats, the school said. The vehicle was removed.

Officers then found two unarmed males who are now in custody, Waterman said. No injuries were reported.

The school provided no other details about the incident.

After consulting with police, Lyons Township High School canceled its homecoming dance that was set to occur at South Campus, Waterman said. He said the school would make every attempt to reschedule the dance.

Western Springs police do not believe any immediate or apparent threat exists to the community, Waterman said. However, he said, South Campus and the surrounding area were expected to remain an “active investigation scene” for several more hours.

The superintendent said police would maintain a heightened presence in the area.
