Volunteers needed to aid with cardiac screening at LTHS

LT seeks volunteers for student heart screenings

Lyons Township High School is pleased to offer students a free electrocardiogram (ECG) heart screening as part of a program to identify teenagers at risk of sudden cardiac death. Approximately 30 young people die every week from a sudden cardiac death, and roughly one-third of these deaths may have been prevented through a simple ECG. The Young Hearts for Life program will be screening LTHS students for free in April.

In order to offer this free screening to students over a 2-day period, nearly 200 volunteers will be needed. Each volunteer will be required to attend one 90-minute training session scheduled for the evening prior to the actual date of the event. Training will be offered from 5-6:30pm or 7-8:30pm Wednesday, April 18, at LTHS South Campus.
Volunteer shifts are available on Thursday, April 19, at South Campus and Friday, April 20, at North Campus and are divided into blocks: (6:45am-11:30am) and (11am-3pm) on both screening days.
No medical training or experience is necessary for volunteers. The screening consists of a three minute ECG. Volunteers attach electrodes to the students’ chest and limbs. An ECG monitors the electrical activity of the heart and prints information about its rate and rhythm. The print out is read by a cardiologist, who interprets the results. Volunteers will also be needed to process students on the day of the screening, data entry, filing, and waiting room assistants. Volunteers must be over the age of 18.
