Facebook Live Sex Assault: 2nd Teen Arrested In Girl's Attack Streamed Online

The 15-year-old boy — accompanied by his mom — surrendered to Chicago police. A 14-year-old boy was arrested in the case over the weekend.

CHICAGO, IL — Accompanied by his mom, a second teenager surrendered to police and was arrested in connection with the sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl whose attack was recorded and streamed on Facebook Live, a Chicago police spokesman said Monday.

The 15-year-old boy, who turned himself in at the 10th District police station, was questioned before being sent to juvenile detention, CPD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi wrote in a series of posts on his Twitter account. Monday's arrest comes after Chicago police apprehended a 14-year-old boy Saturday night in the case.

Both teens have been charged as juveniles with felony counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault, manufacture of child pornography and dissemination of child pornography, Guglielmi wrote Monday, April 3.

Detectives continue to investigate the attack and are trying to identify other suspects glimpsed in the Facebook video, which was viewed by about 40 people before it was pulled off the social media network.

In particular, police are still waiting to arrest and charge the individual who recorded the attack and upload the video, CPD Cmdr. Brendan Deenihan said during a press conference concerning the case Sunday, April 2.

WATCH: Chicago police hold a press conference Sunday, April 2, to discuss the sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl that was streamed on Facebook Live:

During the conference, Chicago police Superintedent Eddie Johnson described the victim as courageous, but he, along with other police officials, admitted "the emotional wounds caused by this savagery" and the trauma from the assault has made it a challenge for the girl to help investigators.

"She's just having such a difficult time even communicating what occurred to her," Deenihan said. "We obviously have a video of the incident, so we have verifiable objective evidence of what occurred to this young lady, but she's just having a very difficult time."

Harassment of the victim and her relatives online and offline also has aggravated matters, Deenihan added. The threats and taunting on the internet and by neighbors became so bad that the Cook County State's Attorney's Office helped the family relocate from its Lawndale neighborhood home.

Police will continue to monitor the bullying against the victim and her family, Deenihan said Sunday. So far, none of the harassment has reached the point in which criminal charges could be filed, he added.

More Patch Coverage:

The sexual assault of the 15-year-old girl occured March 19, the day she went missing, police said. The family reported the teen's disappearance to authorities the next day. That's when relatives discovered the disturbing Facebook Live video of the victim being attacked.

The girl was found the morning of March 21 a few blocks from her home, and she was reunited with her mother before being taken to the hospital. At the time, she was in good condition with injuries to her lip and cheeks, according to relatives.

In the online footage, the girl is sexually assaulted by several boys — at least six, investigators believe — and while the video and its inappropriate content were reported to Facebook, no one alerted police of the attack depicted, something that has outraged Johnson.

"[I]t just disgusts me that people could look at those videos and not pick up the phone and dial 911," he said Sunday. "It makes you wonder where are we going. What are we doing as a society?"

Police have considered charging viewers who watched the attack online before it was pulled down, but Guglielmi told the Chicago Tribune that Facebook officials say identifying those individuals would be impossible.
