WINFIELD, IL — Grace McCumber, 12, says she might want to join the Army or the FBI when she grows up. She's got a long way to go, but she's off to a great start already, helping others by donating goodies to nurses at Central DuPage Hospital for National Nurse's Day.

Grace, a 6th-grader at Hubble Middle School, was inspired to make the donation when she got an assignment about empathy from one of her teachers. Grace imagined how tough it must be to be a nurse, especially during the new coronavirus crisis.

She told Patch, "[Nurses] are doing such good things for us, they deserve good things for them too."

Grace teamed up with her friend Maddy, who owns Maddy's Cakes & Bakes, to get sweets made for the nurses. Then, she and her dad, Sean McCumber, ordered pizzas for the nurses via Sean's law firm, STG Adoption Law and STG Divorce Law.

They delivered the treats and eats at 6 p.m. on National Nurse's Day.

Grace told Patch the nurses were "really happy" to get the pizzas and cupcakes. She added that she "felt happy that I did something good for them and I felt really good about myself.”

Grace also shared a message for nurses throughout the community. She said, "Thank you a lot! A lot of my friends moms and parents are nurses, so I’d like to thank them for being very brave and doing this even though they could get sick.”
