Winfield Fuel & Material Serves Winfield with a Tradition of Excellence for Over 117 Years

Winfield Fuel & Material is a building materials supplier that is a piece of living history for the Village of Winfield. Founded in 1880 by Gilbert Higgins, a local Winfield resident, the business has been passed down from generation to generation for the last 117 years. The Family Tradition has always been to provide great customer service to local contractors and homeowners.

Dateline: Winfield, Illinois, July 25, 2012- Winfield is home to one of the oldest taverns in the Chicago suburbs, John's Restaurant and Tavern (formerly John's Buffet), founded 1921 by Polish immigrant John Karwoski. Another remnant of the past is called Schmidt's Pond. In the late 1800s Peter Schmidt dug a pond to provide a place to harvest ice in the winter. Schmidt used the ice for his meat market, but also provided ice to villagers. The pond still survives, while the icehouse has since been turned into a private residence,.

"The Winfield Glimpses" was the local newspaper from October 1947 to October 1976. The Glimpses changed its name to the "Winfield Examiner" in November 1976 and ran until February 1992. The Winfield Post began serving Winfield in 2009 and is still in publication today.

But no business has been around longer than Winfield Fuel & Material. Started in 1880 by Gilbert Higgins, a resident of Winfield, Illinois begins selling coal to area farmers for their threshing machines. He also hauled gravel and sand with his team of horses and enjoys being Postmaster of the Village. The Higgins family have been instrumental in the political and economical development of Winfield, and helped to take the fledgling prairie town and turn it into the viable and livable village it is today.
