hat to Do When You Don’t Make a Difference: Moral Arguments for God and Other Hope-Sustaining Things

The Wheaton College Department of Philosophy presents a lecture by Dr. Andrew Chignell ’96, Laurance S. Rockefeller Professor of Religion at Princeton University, titled “What to Do When You Don’t Make a Difference: Moral Arguments for God and Other Hope-Sustaining Things" on Thursday, October 1 at 7:30 PM.

Dr. Andrew Chignell ‘96 is a professor in the University Center for Human Values at Princeton University, with appointments in the Religion and Philosophy departments. From 2020 to 2023, he was the president of the North American Kant Society, and in 2024 he co-organized the yearlong Virtual Kant Congress in honor of Kant’s 300th birthday. He has also held teaching positions at Cornell University and the University of Pennsylvania. And fun fact: he will be at Wheaton celebrating his 30th reunion the weekend just after this lecture.

His research focuses mostly on Immanuel Kant and other 17th-19th century philosophers, as well as on philosophy of religion, the ethics of belief, and certain issues in aesthetics and moral psychology (especially hope and despair). He also has a teaching interest in food and animal ethics.
