The Art Department at Wheaton College presents an exhibit August 22 - October 8 by fine arts photographer Douglas R. Gilbert. The exhibit, titled "Italian Light," is a collection of photos capturing the landscape of Italy in indigenous light that the artist calls "a powerful presence."
Gilbert has been a serious photographer for more than 50 years, earning acclaim for his black-and-white photography. Early in his career he worked for Look magazine, photographing numerous celebrities and other stories from 1964-1967. He was a professor of photography at Wheaton College in the 1970s and co-authored C.S. Lewis: Images of His World with English Professor Clyde Kilby during that time.
His fourth book, Forever Young, features previously unpublished Look photographs of a young Bob Dylan. Gilbert currently focuses on landscape photography. His work has been published in numerous national and international publications and is exhibited in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta.
"Italian Light" will be displayed in the Hansen Main and Small Galleries located on the first floor of Adams Hall. A reception will be held on the first floor of Adams Hall at 4:15 p.m. Friday, October 5. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
