Northern Illinois Food Bank hosting Pop-Up Market so families can obtain fresh food at Elgin Community College

(Northern Illinois Food Bank)

Northern Illinois Food Bank will host its fourth drive-thru Pop-Up Market food distribution this Saturday, May 2 from 10am–1pm at Elgin Community College as part of its ongoing COVID-19 relief response. The Food Bank has coordinated the event in partnership with officials from the college and the City of Elgin.

Thanks to continued generous donations from Walmart, Amazon and Trader Joe’s, the Food Bank will have four truckloads (approx. 160,000 pounds total) of various fresh produce and dairy items to distribute.

Anyone in need of food assistance during this uncertain time is welcome to attend. No ID, or proof of address or income is required to receive food.

100+ Food Bank staff and volunteers will help bag and distribute a variety of produce including fresh fruit, fresh greens, potatoes, onions, squash, tomatoes, salad kits and more. Chobani is also providing cases of yogurt cups.

The distribution is a drive-thru model to limit interaction between staff, volunteers, and neighbors. Those attending will not leave their cars. Tables and volunteers will be stationed according to social distancing guidelines, and gloves and masks will be provided in order to ensure the health and safety of Food Bank staff, volunteers and neighbors.
