Ives Vows To Overturn Sanctuary State Status In Illinois

"Sanctuary state protects those who violate the law [at the] expense of those who follow the law," Ives said in a press conference.

WHEATON, IL — Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton), who recently filed to challenge Gov. Bruce Rauner in next year's primaries, hit the ground running with a press conference in Chicago where she asserted that Illinois should not be a sanctuary state. Ives was accompanied by Brian McCann, whose brother, Dennis, was "killed by an illegal immigrant," Ives said on her Facebook page.

According to Ives, Rauner and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel have been too lax in regards to immigration. She dubs herself a "pro-legal-immigration conservative," but said that "we cannot be without the rule of law."

Ives said that Rauner "betrayed people like Brian McCann, who is still awaiting justice for his brother." The man who allegedly killed McCann's brother in a fatal car accident was able to bond out of jail despite an ICE detainer, according to Ives. He later fled and has not been found.

"Illinoisans from all walks of life want the security that comes from knowing violent felons will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," Ives said. Referencing Rauner's recent statement that he was "not in charge," Ives added, "As governor, I won't pretend not to be in charge. I will lead this charge."
