Library to Host First Civil Rights March in Wheaton Event on Zoom

Join WPL and partners for a panel discussion focusing on the first civil rights march held in Wheaton Tuesday, September 21 at 7:00 pm.

Wheaton Public Library, City of Wheaton Community Relations Commission, Wheaton League of Women Voters, DuPage County Historical Museum, and DuPage NAACP are partnering to present a panel discussion focusing on the first civil rights march held in Wheaton in 1966 to pass a fair housing ordinance. The program will be held Tuesday, September 21 at 7:00 pm via Zoom.

The panel discussion will feature residents that were present during the march, including Bernie Kleina, who was the Executive Director of HOPE Fair Housing Center in Wheaton at the time. The sons of the two organizers of the 1966 event, Claude Audley Jr. and Ray Odom, will also be participating as panelists. Their participation will help tell the history of this march and shed some light on key individuals (Nathaniel Odom and Claude Audley) who were integral to the fight for fair housing in Wheaton.

Zach Bishop, DuPage County Historical Museum Curator, will open the program with a brief historic overview of the events. To register, visit wheatonlibrary.org/calendar
