Man Scares Off Mugger With Pocket Knife

Wheaton police say alleged mugger was trying to steal man's groceries.

Wheaton police said a man frightened off a potential mugger who had tried to steal the his groceries, reports said.

The man told police that he was returning home to his apartment on the 700 block of Roosevelt Road after purchasing groceries at 7-Eleven around 9:32 p.m. Feb. 18.

According to the report, as the man was about to carry his bags upstairs to his apartment, he heard a voice behind him demanding that he drop his groceries and hand them over.

The man dropped his groceries as instructed before turning around and pulling out his pocketknife to defend himself.

Police said the alleged mugger did not take anything from the man, nor did he threaten any violence. The would-be mugger was last seen running westbound down Roosevelt Road.

The man described the alleged mugger as a black male in his late teens or early twenties, around 5-feet-9-inches tall, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans. He said he would be able to recognize him again if he saw him again.

Police searched the area but couldn’t find the suspect.

The 7-Eleven clerk told police he didn’t see anyone matching the suspect’s description hanging around the store while the man was shopping.
