NAPERVILLE, IL — A Naperville man is in custody after police say he fled the scene of a crash that claimed the life of bicyclist Renato Vargas-Gutierrez, 40, Tuesday night.

John Gray, 26, of the 400 block of Travelaire Avenue, was charged with one felony count of failure to report an accident involving death in connection with the incident.

Police were called to the intersection of Joliet and Wilson Streets around 10:45 p.m. for a report of a hit-and-run crash that involved a pedestrian. When they got to the scene, they found Vargas-Gutierrez "in a grassy area with his bicycle partially underneath him," a news release from DuPage County State's Attorney's Office said.

Prosecutors say Vargas-Gutierrez had been riding his bicycle south on Joliet Street when he was hit by the car Gray was driving in the same direction. Gray was found by police less than five minutes later near the intersection of Continental Drive and Stevens Court, the news release said.

“It is alleged that after striking Mr. Vargas-Gutierrez with his vehicle, instead of contacting authorities or remaining at the scene to aid his victim, Mr. Gray fled,” DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement. “I offer my sincerest condolences to Renato’s family and friends on their loss and wish them strength as they continue their lives without the love and friendship they once enjoyed with Renato."

Gray is currently being held at DuPage County Jail with bond set at $500,000. He is set to appear in court on Aug. 3.
