No Charges Filed Following 8-Hour Standoff in Wheaton

A 28-year-old Wheaton man barricaded himself inside his home Monday morning.

The man who caused an eight-hour standoff Monday that forced authorities to evacuate homes on Liberty Drive will not be charged, the Daily Herald reports.

A 28-year-old man barricaded himself inside a home on Liberty Drive near President and Williston streets early Monday, according to the article.

The man, who was suicidal, was arrested at 10 a.m. Monday. Police originally responded to the home at 2:25 a.m. Monday and shortly after officers arrived, family members within the home were allowed to leave the residence, according to a city of Wheaton news release.

The suicidal individual was contained inside the residence during the entire incident.

“Residences in the immediate area were evacuated and at no time was the neighborhood or community in danger,” according to the news release.

The heavy police presence in the area of the standoff definitely left residents living in the area questioning what was going on throughout the day Monday.

“It’s a little daunting to see full uniform police, with helmets and riot gear, walking by your house,” Brian Millet, who lives on President Street, told the Daily Herald. “It’s pretty crazy.”
