See Ballet 5:8 at Edman Chapel Sept 15
Acclaimed Chicago Ballet Company opens the Wheaton College Artist Series featuring pianists Catherine Hong and Daniel Paul Horn.
Great art, music and dance tends to spring forth from inspiration. So it is with Juliana Rubio Slager's Ballet, Gospel Impressions, inspired by the great American painter, Makoto Fujimara. To complete the circle of improvisation, the dancers realize Slager's choreography in collaboration with Sergei Rachmaninoff's great Second Piano Concerto. Rather than the usual modern-day economy of means, dancing to recorded music, the Rachmaninoff will be performed live by two distinguished pianists--Catherine Hong from Ohio State University, and Daniel Paul Horn from the faculty of Wheaton College. This live music will achieve the synergy needed to imprint the music on the dance and the dance on the visual images of Fujimara.
The second half, Golden Sessions, draw inspiration from C.S. Lewis' The Four Loves. Along with recorded music by Oliver Davis and Ezzio Bosso, features live performances of China Gates for Solo Piano (John Adams) and Part I of Hallelujah Junction, featuring pianists Hong and Horn.
Think of this as an immersive engagement with the arts—full-bodied and fully-orbed. Slager is known for her dogged determination as the Artistic Director of her relatively young company and wholly committed to it's mission. Likewise, pianists Hong and Horn are world explorers of all things piano and sure to thrill you. Tickets are available to you at tickets.wheaton.edu. Student tickets are affordably priced to encourage participation for the entire family. See you at the concerts!
