Crow Island and eAngel make a difference

Crow Island connects with local nonprofit eAngel Community to donate over 20 classrooms of furniture to inner city schools

Crow Island School in Winnetka recently received a donation of all new classroom furniture made possible through the schools longstanding relationship with VS America, and in honor of Crow Island’s historic significance. As a result, the school had rooms and rooms of furniture that needed a new home.

The challenge according to Adam Rappaport, Director of Building and Grounds for Winnetka Schools was what to do with the current furniture that filled over 25 classrooms. Barb Tubekis, Executive Director of The Volunteer Center of New Trier Township recommended eAngel Community, a local nonprofit whose mission is to match in-kind donations with the specific needs or local nonprofits. Roger Winship former District 36 parent and founder of eAngelCommunity.org, along with Chris Eilers eAngel Director and current Crow Island parent, teamed up to coordinate the donation process with Crow Island’s Principal Julie Pfeffer and School Secretary Lindy Schmidt. “This is a wonderful example of how eAngel builds a community of sharing which began with the VS America gift, followed with the Crow Island donation” explained Roger Winship. eAngel was able to identify nonprofits with the specific needs and matched the generous Crow Island gift with the Archdiocese of Chicago Schools headed up by Tim Cawley, Chief of Parish & School Operations. On Tuesday June 12th, Chris Eilers coordinated the entire moving operation with Tom McGrath Chief Operating Officer for the Office of Catholic Schools. Six trucks moved 20 classrooms of Crow Island furniture to a staging area on the south side of Chicago so that the principals from the Archdiocese’s network of over 100 Chicago schools could allocate resources to classrooms in desperate need of upgrade. The Crow Island gift was further allocated to the Montessori School of Englewood, a CPS Charter School. On Wednesday, June 13th, their truck was filled with dozens of small classroom chairs, tables and book shelves. This donation was administered by Thomas Hale Chairman of the Board, Rita Nolan Executive Director, and coordinated by Maggie Mikuzis Executive Assistant. This collaborative effort provided a unique opportunity to connect Crow Island with a sister school in the city, where students and staff from both communities come together through activities and shared ideas. Since the inception of eAngel almost 20 years ago Roger has observed “that through the eAngel giving process, people come together by transcending the original donation through what becomes meaningful long term relationships”.eAngel Community is 501c3 organization that has operated successfully for many years connecting Chicago area nonprofits with donors providing a vast resource of noncash donations. It matches In-Kind donations with nonprofit needs though a community of sharing; providing donors an easy way to match noncash donations with the needs of deserving nonprofit organizations. Through eAngel, individuals, commercial organizations and even other nonprofits can donate noncash resources to disadvantaged people and the nonprofits which serve them.
