Grant For $60K Offered To Wilmette Parks To Improve Bird Habitat at Gillson Park

Village must match $60,000 of its own to begin project.

The United States Fish and Wildlife Service has offered a $60,000 grant to the Wilmette Park District to help improve the migrant bird habitat at Gillson Park, but the village must match an equal amount in order to receive it.

District commissioners were wary of the possibility while residents in attendance at a recent meeting were in full support, according to the Daily North Shore.

Commissioner Shelley Shelly expressed support of the project, but showed concern about where the $60,000 would come from to match the grant, offering an idea to ask the USFWS to postpone the grant for a year.

“I think it is a great plan but I am not sure about the $60,000,” she said.

“This is a great program,” Wilmette resident Piper Rothschild said. “Anything we can do to improve the habitat and natural environment at the park is wonderful.”
