Neighbors' Calls Lead To 2 Arrests, Barricade Situation For Wilmette Man

After a neighbor called the cops to say he was firing a gun from his roof, he attempted to break into a nearby home, police said.

WILMETTE, IL – A Wilmette man was arrested twice last week following calls from neighbors to police. In the first instance, he was allegedly on his roof shooting shooting some type of gun in the air, and less than a week later he was accused of trying to break into a neighbors house, according to police reports.

Christopher Morris, 21, of the 200 block of Catalpa Place, has been charged with disorderly conduct and attempted criminal trespass to property, both misdemeanors, in connection with the two incidents, Wilmette police said.

The first call came in around 6:52 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 18 when one of Morris's neighbors told police he was on the roof of his home shooting "a BB gun or some type of handgun in the air," according to police.

When officers arrived, Morris refused their commands to come out and barricaded himself in the residence, according to police reports. After a two-hour standoff, officers eventually were able to take him into custody without any injuries. He was taken to Evanston Hospital for evaluation and released later that afternoon.

The following afternoon, Sept. 19, Morris was arrested without incident as he left his residence and released on $150 bond, police said. (Get Patch real-time email alerts for the latest news for Wilmette — or your community. And iPhone users: Check out Patch's new app.)

Then, less than a week later, Wilmette police received another call from one of Morris's neighbors. This time, the neighbor told police he and his wife had been awoken by someone banging on their back door.

Police said Morris was seen walking from the rear to the front door of the callers house, where he repeatedly tried to break open the door with his shoulder.

When responding officers arrived, Morris ran inside his house from his front porch and slammed the door, police said. Wilmette detectives got an arrest warrant for him and at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, he turned himself in.

Police wanted to charge him with felony residential burglary but the Felony Review Unit of the office of the Cook County State's Attorney denied approval. As a result, Morris was charged with misdemeanor attempted criminal trespass to property.
