Drunken Driver Crashes SUV Into Med Spa In Wilmette: Police

A 41-year-old Rosemont man faces DUI and hit-and-run in connection with Sunday's crash.

WILMETTE, IL — Police said drunken Rosemont man drove an SUV through the front door of a Wilmette business Sunday before trying flee the scene of the crash on foot.

Moises Cervantes-Del Rio, 41, of the 9400 block of Maple Drive, has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene of a property damage accident, according to Wilmette police.

Around 9 p.m., Cervantes-Del Rio drove a Jeep with temporary plates into the lobby of Images Med Spa, 505 Skokie Road, eventually coming to a stop at the front desk, according to police and images from the scene.

An officer dispatched to the scene of the crash noticed Cervantes-Del Rio leaving the scene of the crash and stopped him within about a block of the damaged storefront, according to a statement from Deputy Chief Patrick Collins.

Wilmette Fire Department personnel took Cervantes-Del Rio, who police said was alone in the SUV at the time of the crash, to Evanston Hospital for medical evaluation.

Following further investigation, he was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI. After being taken to the Wilmette Police Department, Cervantes-Del Rio refused to provide a breath sample, according to the deputy chief.

Officers also issued Cervantes-Del Rio with citations for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and improper lane usage.

The med spa was closed and the building was empty at the time of the crash.

Collins said the vehicle will be left inside the building until a structural engineer can assess the damage.
