Wilmette Dad Makes Daughter Do the Right Thing After She Does the Wrong Thing

Stolen street signs give a father a chance to teach his 16-year-old about being held accountable for her actions.

WILMETTE, IL — Sometimes, doing the wrong thing can be a good thing if it can lead to a lesson about personal responsibility.

That seems to be the case for a father who walked into the Wilmette Police Department with his 16-year-old daughter Saturday, Aug. 13. The reason: She and her friends had stolen two village street signs, according to police reports.

The girl told officers about the thefts, and the village was able to recover the signs, Deputy Chief Kyle Perkins told Patch. Police also "counseled" the teen, according to the report.

Perkins said the dad didn't say why he had his daughter turn herself in, and he didn't know what the girl's reaction was to the counseling.

Ultimately, the girl was given a local ordinance citation for theft, and she was released to her father. We can't be certain, but we're guessing the time in the car with Dad going to and from the police station was a more excruciating punishment than the citation.
