6 Cars, 1 Boat Stolen From New Trier Communities: Blotters

Thieves made off with a half-dozen unlocked vehicles they found in Winnetka, Glencoe and Wilmette: New Trier Area Police Blotters

The following information comes from the Glencoe, Northfield, Wilmette and Winnetka police departments as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges represent merely accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.


GLENCOE

INCIDENTS

VANDALISM
Someone spray painted "Trump 2020" on a sidewalk near Lincoln Drive and Old Green Bay Road sometime prior to 10:30 a.m. Aug. 5.

TELEPHONE HARASSMENT
A Hazel Avenue resident reported on the afternoon of Aug. 5 or Aug. 6 that someone called them with the intent to harass them, and police continue to investigate.

POSSIBLE CRIMINAL DAMAGE
Someone may have thrown something at a window of a Jeep while it was in traffic near Green Bay and Northwood roads at some point prior to 1:15 a.m. on Aug. 8. Police did not report any damage to the SUV.

STOLEN CAR, OVERNIGHT BURGLARIES
Someone stole a 2020 BMW from the 600 block of Stonegate Terrace after it was left unlocked with the keys inside prior to 9 a.m. Aug. 8. Two other unlocked cars on the same block were also burglarized during the same night, with a backpack and sunglasses reported stolen from one of them.

GIFT CARD SCAM
Scammers deceived a Willow Tree Lane resident into buying $2,000 worth of gift cards and giving them the card details through an unspecified scheme.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Luis D. Perez, 64, of the 600 block of Ziegler Drive, Grayslake, was arrested around 6 p.m. Aug. 6 following a traffic stop near Sheridan Road and Whitebridge Hill and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. He was also cited for illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol by a driver and improper lane usage.

NORTHFIELD

INCIDENTS

SHOPLIFTING
Someone stole about $1,600 worth of liquor from the Mariano's at 1822 Willow Road around 5:15 p.m. on Aug. 2. No further information was provided.

UNWANTED BATHROOM OCCUPANT
Around 6:30 a.m. on Aug. 5, staff at the Starbucks, 1801 Willow Road, reported that there was someone in the bathroom refusing to leave. Officers spoke to him and he agreed to go voluntarily.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
Police were called to the area of Willow and Waukegan roads around 4:15 p.m. on Aug. 8 for a road rage incident. A motorcycle rider reportedly hit an outside mirror on a car, damaging its mirror. The biker apologized and he driver of the other vehicle declined to press charges.

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • A Mt. Pleasant Street resident reported on the afternoon of Aug. 4 that someone had used their identity to file an application for unemployment benefits.
  • A Riverside Drive resident reported on the afternoon of Aug. 9 that someone had used their identity to file for unemployment benefits.

'SUSPICIOUS' INCIDENTS

  • Police were called to the parking lot of Am Yisrael, 4 S. Happ Road, around 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 4 for a report of a car parked in the the lot. Officers spoke with the people inside and they left.
  • Around 9 p.m. on Aug. 4, two people purporting to be police officers knocked on a door in the 1900 block of Boswoth Lane and asked if a particular person lived there. The resident said the person did not live there, and the two people left in a black sedan. Officers did not locate the people involved.
  • A Northfield resident reported that someone in a red SUV pulled to the side of the road in the area of Sunset Ridge Road and Valley Way and appeared to look at their grandchild. Officers did not locate the vehicle involved.

WILMETTE

INCIDENTS

FLEEING STOLEN CAR
When an officer tried to pull over a Honda minivan in the 2700 block of Lake Avenue around 3:30 a.m. on Aug. 6, the driver accelerated away and fled southbound on the Edens Expressway. It turned out the vehicle had just been stolen from the 2400 block of Iroquis Road after it was left unlocked with a key fob inside. Police said it was found undamaged in the 4100 block of South Indiana Avenue. No one has yet been arrested.

STOLEN PADDLE BOARD
Someone stole a paddle board that had been left unattended and unsecured at Gillson Sailing Beach between July 5 and July 19, police were told.

CAR STOLEN
Someone stole a Volkswagon SUV from the 2500 block of Lake Avenue between 12:30 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. on Aug. 8 after it was left unlocked with a key inside. The car was found undamaged in Bettendorf, Iowa, on Aug. 9. No arrests have yet been made.

BOAT THEFT
A resident told police someone stole a kayak and lifejackets from the beach area of a lakefront apartment building in the 1400 block of Sheridan Road at some point between July 2 and Aug. 7.


WINNETKA

INCIDENTS

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
Someone damaged the rear window of an excavator parked in the 700 block of Sheridan Road between 8 a.m. Aug. 4 and 8 a.m. Aug. 5, police were told. Another excavated parked in the 800 block of Mt. Pleasant street also had its back window damaged sometime after 5 p.m. Aug. 4. The two incidents caused $800 in damage.

SIGN THEFTS
Between 10 a.m. Aug. 6 and 2 p.m. Aug. 7, someone stole wooden address signs from the front yards of homes in the 1000 block of Crescent Lane and 1000 block of Fisher Lane for a combined loss of $400.

STOLEN CARS

  • A resident in the 1000 block of Lindenwood Drive reported that someone stole a GMC SUV from their driveway between 3 p.m. Aug. 2 and 3 a.m. Aug. 3 after they left the keys inside. Police reported the combined SCUBA tanks and an I-Pass were also taken. As of 10 days later, the SUV had not been found.
  • Someone stole a Mercedes-Benz from the 800 block of Hill Road between 8:30 p.m. Aug. 8 and 5:30 a.m. Aug. 9 after it was left unlocked with a key fob inside. A garage door opener and I-Pass were also taken. The car was found Aug. 11 in Markham.
  • Someone stole a Range Rover from the 600 block of Walden Road at 3:37 a.m. on Aug. 9, officers were told. Police reported an I-Pass, golf clubs and a cart inside were also taken. The SUV was found later that day in Dolton.

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • A Wilson Street resident reported someone used their identity to apply for unemployment insurance benefits between noon on July 6 and noon on July 13. There was no loss reported.
  • An Ash Street resident reported that someone used their identity to apply for unemployment insurance benefits at some point prior to Aug. 6.
  • A Forest Glen Drive resident discovering on July 30 that someone had used their identity to apply for unemployment insurance benefits. They called police to report it on Aug. 8.

CAR BURGLARIES

  • Someone stole cash and various other property from the center console of a car left unlocked in a driveway in the 100 block of Fuller Lane between 5:30 p.m. Aug. 3 and 8 a.m. Aug. 4 for a $50 loss.
  • Someone burglarized an unlocked car in the 100 block of Fuller Avenue and rummaged through its contents without stealing anything during the night of Aug. 3.
  • A resident in the 1200 block of Cherry Street reported that someone stole a garage door opener worth $25 from an unlocked car parked left with the keys inside.
  • Someone burglarized a car left unlocked in the 1100 block of Spruce Street between 6 p.m. Aug. 8 and 3:30 a.m. Aug. 9, rummaging through the interior. Nothing was listed as stolen at the time of the report.
  • An unlocked car in the 800 block of Hill Road was found rummaged through on the morning of Aug. 9, but nothing was reported stolen.
  • Someone burglarized an unlocked car in a driveway in the first block of Locust Road between 3 p.m. Aug. 8 and 12:30 p.m. Aug. 9.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Iwona Wozniak, 69, of the 100 block of West Delaware Place, Chicago, was arrested around 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 5 at the Wilmette Police Department and charged with retail theft in connection with a July 31 incident at a business in the 500 block of Chestnut Avenue.
