70-Year-Old Ticketed For Shooting BB Gun At Squirrel: Blotter

GLENCOE, IL — The following information comes from the Glencoe, Winnetka and Northfield police departments as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Anyone arrested is innocent unless proven guilty. Criminal charges represent merely accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced.

SUSPICIOUS PHONE CALLS
A resident of the 0-100 block of Green Bay Road reported on the evening of Jan. 17 that an unidentified person had called twice, purporting to be from ComEd. The caller told the resident the electricity would be turned off unless someone was home to meet a representative and sign documents.

UNLAWFUL USE OF A CREDIT CARD
A resident in the 200 block of Wentworth Avenue told police someone tried unsuccessfully to use their credit card information at various locations – both inside and out of the U.S.

IDENTITY THEFT
A resident in the 200 block of Walden Drive reported that someone made a purchase using an already closed account. As a result, the resident reported receiving calls from a collection agency.

ARRESTS

A 40-year-old Waukegan man was arrested shortly before 5 p.m. on Jan. 18 near I-94 and Tower Road and charged with driving an uninsured vehicle with a suspended license.

A 35-year-old Chicago man was arrested at 4:39 p.m. on Jan. 22 near the intersection of Scott Avenue and Green Bay Road and charged with driving with a suspended license.

INCIDENTS

THEFT BY DECEPTION
An employee in at a business in the 500 block of Lincoln Avenue reported at noon on Jan. 17 that someone called up claiming to be a ComEd employee. The caller asked for gift cards to be purchased to make payments on a delinquent account. The amount of reported loss was $422.41.

IDENTITY THEFT
A resident in the 500 block of Sheridan Road reported on the afternoon of Jan. 17 that someone had used their personal information to open up a Macy's store credit account sometime after Jan. 10.

AGGRAVATED IDENTITY THEFT
A resident in the 800 block of Bryant Avenue reported on the afternoon of Jan. 18 that someone had used their personal information to access their Chase bank account, request a new card and make unauthorized purchases. The resident – whose email was also compromised – discovered that more than $4,000 was taken.

THEFT BY DECEPTION
A resident in the 500 block of Provident Avenue reported shortly before noon on Jan. 19 that someone had contacted them "under fraudulent circumstances" between Jan. 16-18 and requested their personal information "to issue a refund via bank transfer." More than $5,000 was reported stolen.

THEFT BY DECEPTION
A resident of the 400 block of Poplar Street reported on the morning of Jan. 21 that someone contacted them the previous day "under fraudulent circumstances" and asked the resident to buy iTunes gift cards to restore an email account for a loss of $600.

ARRESTS

Jonathan Gomez, 24, of the 400 block of West Touhy Avenue in Des Plaines, was arrested at 3:24 a.m. on Jan. 20 in the 900 block of Vince Street and charged with driving with a removed license and issued citations for illegal transportation of alcohol, no proof of insurance, improper lane usage speeding and failure to signal.

INCIDENTS

RETAIL THEFT
Police were called to an unspecified business in the 1800 block of Willow Road at 5:14 p.m. on Jan. 18 for a shoplifting report. Two women had been seen taking bottles of liquor from the store without paying for them before fleeing the scene in a gray vehicle. They were last seen heading east on Willow and then south on the Edens Expressway.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

A 70-year-old Northfield man was ticketed Jan. 16 after police responded to a complaint of damage to property in the area of the 200 block of Latrobe Avenue on Jan. 16. Officers found what looked to be damage from a BB or pellet on the kitchen window of a resident. The officers conducted a neighborhood canvas and located the man, who admitted he shot a BB gun at a squirrel sitting on a fence between his home and the victim’s property. The man was apologetic and offered to pay restitution to the victim. He was issued a local ordinance citation for unlawfully discharging a firearm within Northfield village limits.

A 55-year-old Evanston man was arrested at 8:17 p.m. on Jan. 16 and charged with driving with a suspended license and expired registration following a traffic stop in the area of Happ and Willow roads.
