Am Shalom Rabbi Becomes an Uber Driver

Senior rabbi Steven Stark Lowenstein decided to try something outside the box as a new experience.

A prominent rabbi at the reform congregation Am Shalom in Glencoe recently tried something much different from delivering a sermon.

Steven Stark Lowenstein, a senior rabbi at the congregation, decided to become an Uber driver during his spare time. The decision was a result of him using the car company as a customer and marveling at how the service changes how people interact with others and do business, according to the Daily North Shore.

“I had no idea what it would yield and what the message was supposed to be,” he told the DNS. “To me it was a timely business and an opportunity to explore what is happening in the world.”

Lowenstein documented the experience and shared it as part of his sermon for Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. In a journal he kept on his smart phone, Lowenstein expressed his amazement with the company’s technology and learned about himself about human communication.

“There were some moments as an Uber driver I connected with people in a powerful way that doesn’t always happen everyday,” he said.
