Fake DEA agent uses drug discovery as excuse to steal resident's identity; home repair fraudsters reported: New Trier Area Police Blotters

The following information comes from the Glencoe, Northfield, Wilmette and Winnetka police departments as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges represent merely accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

INCIDENTS

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
Someone removed a pool cover and disconnected the piping system of an inflatable, above-ground pool at a home in the 500 block of Jefferson Avenue at some point prior to 7:30 a.m. on June 18, temporarily disabling it and causing less than $500 in damage.

DUMPING
Someone dumped yard waste, cabinets and furniture in an alleyway in the first block of Green Bay Road prior to 11:30 a.m. on June 20.

IDENTITY THEFT
A Dundee Road resident reported on the afternoon of June 23 that someone had used their identity in an unsuccessful attempt to apply for unemployment benefits.

CAR BURGLARIES

  • A burglar rummaged through an unlocked Lexus in the 300 block of Woodlawn Avenue prior to 5:15 a.m. on June 22. Nothing was reported stolen.
  • Someone burglarized an unlocked Audi in the 100 block of Lake Street at some point before 5:45 a.m. on June 22, with nothing reported stolen.

HOME REPAIR FRAUDS
Fraudsters swindled $1,200 out of two residents of the 1100 block of Pebblewood Lane on the afternoon of June 23, police were told. They offered to do tuck pointing work on the homes of two victims, explaining that they were in the neighborhood and working on other homes nearby. Each resident placed a $600 deposit but the fraudsters never showed up. The fraudsters were described as two men and one woman.

INCIDENTS

IDENTITY THEFT
An Edens Lane resident reported on the afternoon of June 18 that someone had made several unauthorized attempts to open accounts using their identity.

STOLEN CAR
A car thief stole a BMW from a driveway in the 200 block of Riverside Drive during the night of June 18 or morning of June 19. It was later found in the 1300 block of West Garfield Boulevard in Chicago on June 21. There were no arrests or citation associated with its recovery, police said.

CAR BURGLARIES (ALL UNLOCKED)

  • Someone burglarized a car in a driveway in the 100 block of Dickens Road during the night of June 16 or early morning of June 17.
  • A car parked in the driveway of a home in the 100 block of Lagoon Drive was burglarized at some point prior to 1:45 a.m. on June 18.
  • Police were called to a home in the 1500 block of Harding Road around 3:45 p.m. on June 18 for a report that someone had burglarized a car in the driveway during the prior night. A purse was reported stolen.
  • Someone burglarized four cars in the driveway of a home in the 500 block of Edens Lane during the night of June 18 or morning of June 19.
  • Another resident in the 500 block of Edens Lane reported that a car parked in a driveway had been burglarized on June 18 or June 19.
  • Police were called to the 200 block of Riverside Drive around 12:30 p.m. on June 19 for a report that someone had burglarized a parked car in the driveway during the previous night. A wallet was reported stolen.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

A 33-year-old Evanston woman was arrested around 11 a.m. on June 20 and charged with driving with a suspended license as officers investigated a traffic crash around Willow and Northfield roads. She was also issued a disobeying a traffic control device citation.

INCIDENTS

CAR BURGLARY
Someone burglarized an unlocked car parked in the 1600 block of Walnut Avenue between 6 p.m. June 16 and 9 a.m. June 17, stealing personal items from inside.

SCAM
A Maple Avenue resident reported getting a call around 7 p.m. June 17 from someone claiming to be an agent of the Drug Enforcement Administration. The caller told the resident agents had discovered drugs inside a vehicle that had been rented using the name of the resident. The purported DEA agent got the resident to give over her personal and bank account information before she realized it was a scam.

STOLEN CAR
A resident in the 100 block of Carriage Way reported their car had been stolen after it was left parked in the driveway unlocked with a key fob left inside. The car was later found in Riverside.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE

  • A visitor at Gillson sailing beach, 101 Lake Ave., reported that someone smashed their sailing box and threw their belongings around the beach between 9 p.m. June 17 and 8:30 a.m. June 18.
  • Someone damaged a car parked in a driveway in the 400 block of Hibbard Road between March 15 and June 5.

WINNETKA

INCIDENTS

DEFACEMENT
Police found someone had defaced the south wall of an underpass in the 100 block of Northwestern Drive between 10 a.m. June 15 and 11 a.m. June 16, causing $300 in damage.

AGGRAVATED IDENTITY THEFT
A Hawthorn Lane resident reported discovering on the afternoon of June 15 that someone had used their identity to access an investment account and withdrew more than $5,000. The resident reported the thief may also have tampered with their email, as they noticed a suspicious message related to the withdrawal.

THEFTS

  • Someone stole a bicycle worth $400 that was left unlocked in the 1000 block of Fisher Lane between 8:40 and 8:45 p.m. on June 11.
  • A business owner in the 700 block of Elm Street reported that someone stole 12 outdoor seat cushions that had been tied to chairs for a loss of $120 between 8 p.m. June 17 and 6:30 a.m. on June 18.
  • A thief stole outdoor chairs, planters, a welcome mat and a fire pit from the front and backyards of a home in the 1500 block of Scott Avenue between 8 p.m. June 12 and 10:30 a.m. June 18 for a loss of nearly $1,000.
  • Someone stole an unlocked bicycle worth $200 that had been left unlocked between 5 and 6 p.m. June 18 at Elder Lane Park, 299 Sheridan Road.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Cristian Carrizal, 25, of the 3100 block of South Avers Avenue, Chicago, was arrested around 4:45 a.m. on June 18 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and unlawful use of a weapon following a traffic stop in the 1100 block of Elm Street. Police reported he had a loaded firearm in his possession that was not properly secured. Officers also issued him citations for disobeying a stop sign and driving with flat tires.
