Employee Charged With Stealing $6,600 From 85-Year-Old: Blotters
A financial exploitation of the elderly arrest and other recent incidents are on the Winnetka, Glencoe, Northfield blotters for Feb. 7–20.

WINNETKA, IL — The following information comes from the Glencoe, Winnetka and Northfield police departments as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges represent merely accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
WINNETKA
INCIDENTS
IDENTITY THEFTS
- An Arbor Vitae Road resident reported on the afternoon of Feb. 2 that someone had used their identity to open up an unauthorized American Express account sometime after Jan. 28.
- A Tower Road resident reported on the evening of Feb. 2 that someone had used their identity to open up multiple unauthorized credit card accounts and attempted to open up even more starting Nov. 1, 2017 and accruing bills of more than $5,000.
- An Oak Street resident reported on the afternoon of Feb. 8 that someone had used their identity between Jan. 17 and Jan. 22 to attempt to open up several unauthorized credit card accounts. There was no loss reported.
- A Greenwood Avenue resident reported on the afternoon of Feb. 16 that someone had used their identity to open up a Banana Republic Visa credit card between Dec. 31 and Feb. 16. There was no loss reported.
CAR BURGLARIES/TRESPASSING

- Someone rummaged through an unlocked parked car between 4 p.m. Feb. 3 and 8 a.m. Feb. 4 in the 900 block of Elm Street. Nothing was reported stolen.
- An unlocked car parked in a driveway in the 600 block of Elm Street was rummaged through between 9 p.m. Feb. 3 and 8 a.m. Feb. 4 with nothing reported stolen.
- .A resident in the 1100 block of Asbury Avenue reported that someone stole a pair of women's cycle shoes from inside a car parked in the driveway between 5 p.m. Feb. 16 and 11 a.m. Feb. 17 for a loss of $135. Police did not specify if the car was locked.
CRIMINAL DAMAGE
- An employee at a restaurant in the 900 block of Green Bay Road reported that someone had done $1,000 in damage to a steel fence surrounding an outdoor patio sometime between Jan. 4 and Feb. 4.
- Someone damaged the front window of a vehicle parked in a lot in the 400 block of Hibbard Road between 6 and 7:20 p.m. on Feb. 10, police were told.
- Someone damaged the front driver's side bumper on a car parked in the 400 block of Linden Street between 7:40 p.m. on Feb. 4 and 6:30 a.m. on Feb. 5, police were told.
FORGERY
An employee of a bank in the first block of Green Bay Road reported on the morning of Feb. 7 that someone had tried to cash a fraudulent check but was declined on July 20, 2018.

ARRESTS
A 20-year-old Chicago man was arrested at 12:39 a.m. on Feb. 4 and charged with driving with a suspended driver's license and ticketed for speeding following a traffic stop in the 200 block of Sheridan Road.
Beonca Ramirez, 26, of the 8800 block of South Harlem Avenue, Bridgeview, turned herself in 7:30 a.m. on Feb. 8 at the Winnetka Police Department and charged with financial exploitation of the elderly. She is charged with stealing about $6,600 from her employer, an 85-year-old Winnetka woman in connection with an incident reported Jan. 29, 2018.
GLENCOE
INCIDENTS
IDENTITY THEFT
- A caller purporting to be a representative of the Social Security Administration managed to obtain a Glencoe resident's social security number after the caller claimed the resident, who later realized it was a scam, had outstanding fines, police were told on Feb. 5.
- A Walden Avenue resident reported on the morning of Feb. 8 that someone had used their identity to open a $35,000 account with Navy Federal Credit Union. Another credit union account was denied and another card had no value.
- A Country Lane resident reported on the afternoon of Feb. 11 that someone had used their identity to open up a Sears credit card, T-Mobile account and a Sprint account.
- A Dundee Road resident reported on the afternoon of Feb. 12 someone had opened a credit cards with JC Penny, Banana Republic and Pier 1, as well as a bank account with Comenity Bank.
GARBAGE DUMPING
A resident in the 600 block of Vernon Avenue reported on the morning of Feb. 7 that someone threw garbage on and around their property and moved a garbage can, preventing it from being picked up.
SUSPICIOUS PEOPLE
People were seen walking around several vehicles around 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 9 in the 1100 block of Sheridan Road fled the scene when confronted by residents.
HOME BURGLARIES
- Someone broke into a home in the 100 block of Timber Lane and stolen an undetermined amount of jewelry at some point prior to 7:21 p.m. on Feb. 12.
- Someone broke into a home in the 1000 block of Sheridan Road sometime prior to 3 p.m. on Feb. 13, but nothing was reported stolen.
- Sometime prior to 12:15 a.m. on Feb. 19, a burglar took a garage door opener from an unlocked Mini Cooper in the 700 block of Apple Tree Lane and used it to get into a garage and rummage through an unlocked 2017 Hyundai. Nothing was reported stolen.
CAR BURGLARIES/TRESPASSING
- Someone got into an unlocked 2003 Mercedes Benz in the 100 block of Green Bay Road prior to 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 17, police were told.
- Someone got into an unlocked 1980 Mercedes Benz in the 400 block of Madison Avenue prior prior to 9:45 a.m. on Feb. 17.
- Someone got into an unlocked 2016 Jeep in the 700 block of Sycamore Lane prior to 9 a.m. on Feb. 19.
- Someone got into an unlocked 2016 Mazda in the 1000 block of Edgebrook Lane prior to 4 p.m. on Feb. 19.
DECEPTIVE PRACTICES
A Beach Road resident reported someone opened a business checking account at PNC Bank and tried to transfer $300,000 from the resident's account to the fraudulent account. The transaction was flagged by the bank's fraud department and the resident was notified.
BAIL SCAM
A resident in the 600 block of Vernon Avenue reported on the afternoon of Feb. 19 that someone had tried to convince them that a relative was in jail and needed $16,000. No money was paid.
ARRESTS
Christian M. LaChapelle, 41, of the 300 block of Green Bay Road, Glencoe, was arrested around 2:45 p.m. on Feb. 8 in his block of residence on an active arrest warrant.
Alexander E. Obolsky, 56, of the 200 block of Walden Drive, Glencoe, was arrested around 5 a.m. on Feb. 10 in his block of residence and charged with domestic battery.

INCIDENTS
HOME BURGLARY
- A resident of the first block of Old Hunt Road reported on the morning of Feb. 4 that a home was burglarized around 8 p.m. on Feb. 3 via an unlocked door.
CAR BURGLARIES
- Someone burglarized an unlocked car parked in the 100 block of Riverside Drive on the overnight hours of Feb. 3–4.
- Six unlocked cars were burglarized during the overnight hours of Feb. 4–5 in the 1600 block of Orchard Lane, the 500 block of Earl Drive, the 200 block of Graemere Street, the 1600 block of Harding Road and the 1700 block of Harding Road.
- Two unlocked cars in the 300 block of Jeffery Street were burglarized in the overnight hours of Feb. 6–7.
- A resident in the 1700 block of Maple Street reported shortly before 3 p.m. on Feb. 8 that someone had burglarized two vehicles about an hour earlier.
LOUD SALTING
Police were called to a church in the 1900 block of Old Willow Road for a report of a suspicious car playing loud music in the parking lot shortly before 1:30 a.m. on Feb. 6. Police spoke with a contractor who was applying salt to the parking lot at the time and asked him to turn his music down.
SUSPICIOUS PERSON
A resident of the 2100 block of Willow Road came into the station around 11:15 a.m. on Feb. 6 to report seeing a suspicious man in their backyard earlier that morning. Police suggested the resident call 911 immediately if they see the person again.
STOLEN CAR?
A car was reported stolen from a BMW dealership in the 700 block of West Frontage Road between Feb. 5 and Feb. 8 but was discovered on the lot on Feb. 11.
ELECTRONIC HARASSMENT
A Riverside Drive resident reported around 2:45 p.m. that someone had sent them threatening messages on a dating website.
SHOPLIFTING
Officers were called to a gift and accessories store in the 300 block of Happ Road for a report that retail theft had taken place around 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 12.
SUSPICIOUS OPEN DOOR
Police were called to a bank in the 400 block of Central Avenue for a report from a Highland Park resident who told police they returned to their vehicle to find a side door open. Officers reported it did not appear anything had been disturbed in the car and that it was possible the bank patron had accidentally pressed the button on the key fob that opens the vehicle's sliding door.
SUSPICIOUS CALLS
Police placed a special watch on a home in the 1800 block of Willow Road after a resident reported around 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 15 that they had received several phone calls from people they did not recognize.
ARRESTS
A 49-year-old Wauconda man was arrested around 7 a.m. on Feb. 9 in the 300 block of Walnut Avenue and charged with driving with a suspended license. He was also issued a citation for disobeying a traffic control device.
