Exhibition opens June 25, 5-7pm at ZIA Gallery: Paula Kovarik (drawing with thread) & Jacqueline Baerwald (books + painting)

Opening June 25, 5-7pm at ZIA Gallery, artists Jacqueline Baerwald and Paula Kovarik use alternative materials toward artistic expressions.

Opening June 25, 5-7pm at ZIA Gallery, two non-traditional artists Jacqueline Baerwald and Paula Kovarik employ alternative materials and contemporary approaches to their artistic expressions. Baerwald collects books to assemble and stack in a sculptural manner. Then she paints on the covers and bindings, choosing which found-titles to incorporate into her imagery and content. Through the graphic-art character she calls “Melondy,” Baerwald explores issues relating to society, young women, and girls.

Paula Kovarik continues to garner awards and accolades for her inventive use of fabric and thread, transforming the traditional idea of “quilting” into “drawing-with-thread.” The qualities of fabric, sometimes found and shredded, along with careful attention to line, create non-linear narratives both playful and profound. Driven to respond to the world around her, including politics, the environment, technology, and beyond; Kovarik obliges with invention, wit, and beauty.
