Fake Check Scam Winds Up Costing Over $2,900: Blotters
Winnetka, Glencoe, Northfield police blotters for May 17 - May 23

WINNETKA, IL — The following information comes from the Glencoe, Winnetka and Northfield police departments as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Anyone arrested is innocent unless proven guilty. Criminal charges represent merely accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced.

INCIDENTS
'SECRETS' SCAM
A resident of Linden Street reported receiving a letter on May 14 that demanded payment in the form of Bitcoin in exchange for not revealing unspecified personal information.

IDENTITY THEFT
A Scott Avenue resident reported someone opened up a satellite television account and made $245 in unauthorized charges to their credit card between Nov. 1, 2017 and May 14.
GIFT CARD SCAM
A Walnut Street resident reported that they had been contacted by someone through email who sent a counterfeit check. The resident was convinced to buy more than $2,900 worth of gift cards.

THEFT
Someone took a wallet that had been left behind on a Metra train sometime between May 7 and May 18. It contained cash and several cards worth $548.
IDENTITY THEFT
A Sheridan Road resident reported that someone used their credit card to make multiple unauthorized purchases between May 15 and May 17 worth more than $2,700.
HOME BURGLARY
A Green Bay Road resident reported that someone broke into a home and stole jewelry and silverware sometime between 10:30 a.m. on May 19 and 12:30 p.m. on May 20.

THEFT
A resident in the 1100 block of Pebblewood Lane reported at 4:09 p.m. on May 17 that someone had stolen two flower planters from their front law.
ACCIDENTAL PROPERTY DAMAGE
Someone struck and damaged an electrical box connected to the village's early warning siren sometime prior to 11:17 a.m. on May 22.
ARRESTS/CITATIONS
Rivera J. Alvarez, 39, of the 2900 block of North Newcastle Avenue in Chciago, was arrested at 5:41 p.m. on May 20 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, with a blood alcohol concentration above 0.08 and driving with an expired license following a traffic stop near the intersection of Green Bay Road and Park Avenue. He was also ticketed for speeding, improper lane usage and illegal transportation of alcohol.
An 18-year-old Winnetka man was issued citations for expired registration and possession of cannabis at 10:52 p.m. on May 20 following a traffic stop near the intersection of Hohlfelder and Westley roads.
A 27-year-old Indianapolis man was arrested at 3:25 a.m. on May 22 and charged with driving with a suspended license following a traffic stop at Dundee Road and the Edens Expressway. He was also issued a citation for driving in a turn lane.
NORTHFIELD
INCIDENTS
BURGLARY
Someone broke into a storage building in the 2100 block of Sunset Ridge Road sometime before 10:30 a.m. on May 19, stealing electronics worth more than $1,200.
ARRESTS/CITATIONS
A 24-year-old Chicago man was arrested at 7:08 p.m. on May 17 near the intersection of Lagoon Drive and Willow Road and charged with driving with a suspended license. He was also ticketed for speeding.
