Fake Village Employee Asks To 'Inspect Water': Blotters

Garage door openers taken from unlocked cars; cars stolen; police stop shoplifters on Edens Expressway: New Trier Area Police Blotters

The following information comes from the Glencoe, Northfield, Wilmette and Winnetka police departments as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges represent merely accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.


GLENCOE

INCIDENTS

STOLEN CARS ELUDE POLICE
Two vehicles fled from police around 3:45 a.m. on June 26 after an officer attempted to pull them over near the intersection of Scott Avenue and Sheridan Road. One of the two cars had stolen license plates and the other vehicle was itself reported stolen.

CAR STOLEN
Someone stole an Audi that had been left unlocked in the 100 block of Maple Hill Road with the keys inside. Credit cards and a cell phone were also reported stolen.

CAR BURGLARIES

  • A garage door opener was reported stolen from inside a BMW left unlocked in the 1100 block of Carole Lane during the night of June 25.
  • Someone stole a lawn chair from inside a Lexus that had been left unlocked in the 400 block of Kelling Lane prior to 3:45 p.m. on June 27.
  • Someone removed a Louis Vuitton purse from inside an unlocked Infiniti parked in the 300 block of South Avenue. The purse was found a block away with nothing missing.
  • Burglars stole a child's jacket, sunglasses and a briefcase from inside an unlocked Chevrolet and BMW in the 200 block of Franklin Road at some point prior to 8:30 a.m. on June 29.
  • Someone burglarized a Volkswagen that had been left unlocked in the 100 block of Scott Avenue prior to 9 am. on June 29. Nothing was reported missing.
  • Someone stole a backpack and laptop from inside an unlocked Subaru prior to 11:15 a.m. on June 29.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Tahara M. Cullins, 29, of the 10800 block of South Indiana Avenue, Chicago, was arrested around 10:30 a.m. on June 26 near the intersection of Gage Street and Green Bay Road and charged with possession of burglary tools, a felony, and driving with a suspended driver's license. Police also reported they issued him a citation for driving without lights when required.

INCIDENTS

GARAGE BURGLARY
Police were called to the 200 block of Shadowood Lane around 4:30 a.m. on June 22 for a report that someone had gotten into an unlocked garage and burglarized a pair of vehicles inside without stealing anything.

CAR BURGLARY
A resident in the 200 block of Shadowood Lane reported around 5 a.m. on June 22 that someone stole a wallet and satellite radio player from inside an unlocked car.

BURGLARY ATTEMPT?
The owner of property in the 800 block of Happ Road told police on June 22 that they had been notified by a neighbor that a suspicious man had tried to open windows on their property.

IDENTITY THEFT
An Arbor Lane resident reported on June 23 that someone had filed for unemployment benefits using their identity.

UNREGISTERED SOLICITOR
A resident in the first block of Bristol Road reported around 6:15 p.m. on June 23 that there was an unregistered solicitor in the area. Officers reported they told the solicitor how to register with the village.

RUSE HOME BURGLARY
Police were called back to the 200 block of Shadowood Lane around 6 p.m. on June 24 for a report that a home burglary had just taken place. An unidentified man told the homeowner he was a village employee and needed to get into the home to "inspect the water." The resident allowed the fake inspector inside for about 10 minutes. The homeowner noticed jewelry was missing after the man departed.

CREDIT CARD FRAUD
Staff at the post office, 1787 Orchard Lane, reported around 8:45 a.m. on June 26 that a man had used a fraudulent debit card to buy a money order.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
A resident in the 100 block of Dickens Road reported around 3:30 p.m. on June 26 that someone had cut an inflatable water park in their yard at some point between the night of June 24 and the morning of June 25, causing an estimated $700 in damage.


WILMETTE

INCIDENTS

GARAGE BURGLARY
Someone stole a Raleigh bicycle worth $500 from inside an attached garage in the 600 block of Laurel Avenue at some point between June 13 and June 20.

CAR BURGLARY/CREDIT CARD FRAUD
Someone stole a wallet from inside an unlocked Acura parked outside a garage in the 900 block of Greenleaf Avenue between 9 p.m. June 21 and 7 a.m. June 22. Cards from inside the wallet were later used at various locations.

RETAIL THEFT
Staff at Walgreens, 811 Green Bay Road, reported that a female shoplifter put an unspecified item in her purse and left the store shortly before 3:45 p.m. on June 22.

APPLE SCAM
A Central Avenue resident reported on the evening of June 24 that they had been scammed out of thousands of dollars after getting a text message warning that an iCloud account had been hacked. The resident gave scammers remote access to their computers and eventually transferred $2,000 in online payments using a mobile app and $1,000 in Target gift cards. The resident also accidentally handed over control to their Target charge card account, which resulted in another $2,300 in fraudulent charges.

SIGN THEFT
A resident in the 1200 block of North Branch Road reported on June 27 that they discovered someone had stolen a sign from their front yard on June 12.

LEAF BLOWER THEFT
A landscaper working at a home in the 800 block of Leamington Avenue reported that a man stole their leaf blower around 9:45 a.m. on June 29. He fled the scene in a maroon, four-door sedan with three other men, police were told.

JEWELRY THEFT
A resident in the 1600 block of Sheridan Road reported in late June that someone stole jewelry from their home between March 15 and May 22.

PURSE THEFT
A visitor at Gillson Park, 700 Michigan Ave., reported that someone stole their purse after they left it unattended near the dog beach between 8 and 8:30 p.m. on June 29.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE

  • CTA staff reported that someone defaced a train car between 5 p.m. June 20 and 7 p.m. June 21, writing H2O on the side.
  • Someone damaged a vehicle parked in front of a house in the 300 block of 17th Street between 8:30 p.m. on June 25 and 8 a.m. on June 27.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Mia N. Martin, 19, of the 1500 block of West 155th Street, Chicago, Dierra M. Bluitt, 22, of the 3700 block of South Indiana Avenue, Chicago, and Yentl Jackson, 23, of the first block of East Garfield Boulevard, Chicago were arrested around 5:30 p.m. on June 25 following a traffic stop on the Edens Expressway and charged with the misdemeanor retail theft of more than $450 in cosmetic creams from the Walgreens, 811 Green Bay Road. Martin also had an active arrest warrant connected to an earlier charge of shoplifting in Will County.


WINNETKA

INCIDENTS

HOME BURGLARY/STOLEN CAR
A resident in the 600 block of Rosewood Avenue reported someone stole a car from inside their garage. The burglar used a garage door opener taken from inside an unlocked car parked in the driveway to get into the garage for a loss of over $5,000.

CAR BURGLARY
Someone burglarized an unlocked car in the 800 block of Eldorado Street around 1 a.m. on June 24. Nothing was listed as stolen from inside at the time of the report.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
A resident in the 1000 block of Oak Street reported that someone caused $30 in damage to a flag hanging on their front gate between 7:15 and 10 p.m. on June 28.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Jorge F. Jimenez, 34, of the 400 block of Chatham Circle, Buffalo Grove, was arrested by the Lake County Sheriff's Office on a warrant issued by Winnetka police in connection with a Feb. 11 report of shoplifting at the Walgreens, 925 Green Bay Road.
