Glencoe Supports National Suicide Prevention Month

The village is partnering with Family Service of Glencoe to battle suicide.

(Glencoe, Illinois) — The Village of Glencoe and Family Service of Glencoe (FSG) have partnered once again to promote National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month throughout September. Together the organizations are working to help eliminate the stigma of suicide in our community by providing educational materials on the risk factors and warning signs of suicide, and by encouraging positive discussion around and the use of mental health resources.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention reports that death by suicide is currently the 11th leading cause of death in Illinois each year and that suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death for those ages 15 – 34 and, on average, one person dies by suicide every six hours in our state.

“Because of the stigma surrounding mental health and suicide, too many people who are struggling remain silent and never connect with the mental health treatment they need,” explained Kathy Livingston, LCSW, Clinical Director of Family Service of Glencoe. “Sometimes all it takes is one conversation from a friend, family member or colleague to help convince someone to seek professional help. It’s as easy as saying “I’m concerned about you” or “I’ve noticed you seem different lately, is everything okay?”

The message is simple: if you see something, say something. All community members are encouraged to take time this month to review the information and links to more resources available on the Family Service of Glencoe website at www.familyserviceofglencoe.org. Materials include lists of risk factors and warnings signs, and tips for starting those hard conversations.
