Hackers collect identities through phony grant application; car egged; fleeing shoplifter crashes: New Trier Area Police Blotters
The following information comes from the Glencoe, Northfield, Wilmette and Winnetka police departments as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges represent merely accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
GLENCOE
INCIDENTS
HOME REPAIR FRAUD
An elderly or disabled Park Avenue resident contacted a locksmith over the internet, but the locksmith who changed the lot fraudulently charged the resident more than $1,000, police were told around 1 p.m. on May 14.
GARAGE BURGLARY
At some point before 9:45 a.m. on May 18, someone got into an unlocked, detached garage and stole a bicycle worth $1,000 from a home in the 100 block of Beach Road.

CHECK SCAM
A Forestway Drive resident reported on the afternoon of May 21 that someone that someone sent them a fraudulent check as a down payment to write an article. The scammer then tried and failed to get the resident to send back some money as a "refund" for the bad check.

NORTHFIELD
INCIDENTS
THEFT
Someone stole a laptop computer from an office in the 1800 block of Oak Street prior to 7 a.m. on May 12.
UNLICENSED SOLICITATION
A resident in the 2100 block of Drury Lane reported around 1:30 p.m. on May 14 that an unlicensed solicitor was going door-to-door. Police found the person and explained how they need a village permit.
STOLEN CAR
Someone stole an Acura from the first block of Longmeadow Road prior to 4:30 a.m. on May 15.
CAR BURGLARY
Someone got into an unlocked car in the 100 block of Red Bar Lane during the night of May 17 or morning of May 18. Nothing was listed as stolen at the time of the report.
ANIMAL BITE
A Landreth Lane resident called police around 5:30 p.m. on May 18 to report that a dog had bitten their dog while they walked on the sidewalk. Officers called to the scene suggested both residents exchange information.
INSTAGRAM GRANT SCAM
A Meadowbrook Drive resident reported around 6 p.m. on May 18 that they had received a message on social media from their real estate broker, which invited the resident to submit personal information to apply to a grant program. The broker later explained their social media account had been hacked.
RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY/HIT-AND-RUN
At 6:20 p.m. on May 19, a resident of the first block of Hibbard Road reported two men or boys ran out of their house upon their return. The pair got into a black SUV and fled the scene south on Hibbard. The homeowner followed the SUV and witnessed it crash into another car around the intersection with Lake Avenue in Wilmette. The black SUV was later found unoccupied in the 3200 block of Old Glenview Road in Wilmette.
SUPICIOUS PHONE CALL
A Grove Drive resident reported getting a call from the cable provider inquiring about a recent complaint, police were told on the night of May 22, but the resident said they had never called the company about any issues.
SUSPECTED SHOPLIFTING
Staff at Walgreens, 1825 Willow Road, reported around 8:30 p.m. that one of several people had set off the anti-theft sensors while leaving the store, but they were unable to provide a description or determine if any items had been stolen.
IDENTITY THEFTS
- A Happ Road resident reported that someone had compromised their Social Security number and other personal information.
- An Avon Avenue resident reported on the evening of May 18 that someone had used their identity to lease a condominium somewhere.
ARRESTS/CITATIONS
John B. Mulhall, 28, of the 2400 block of Illinois Road, Northbrook, was arrested around 9:45 a.m. May 16 at his home in connection with an April 23 traffic crash in the 300 block of Sunset Ridge Road and issued citations for negligent driving and failure to report an accident.
WILMETTE
INCIDENTS
THEFT
An unidentified thief in an older model blue Nissan Altima or Toyota sedan stole a backpack leaf blower from two different Wilmette Public Works vehicles around 10:45 a.m. May 12 at the intersection of LeClaire and Washington avenues.
EGGING
A resident in the 400 block of Laverge Avenue reported someone threw eggs at a vehicle between 9 p.m. May 12 and 1:45 p.m. May 13.
CRIMINAL DAMAGE
- Someone damaged a passenger side window on a parked car in the 3000 block of Gregory Avenue between May 6 and May 13.
- Staff at Harper School, 1101 Darmouth St., discovered graffiti on a door in the school between 3 p.m. May 6 and 7 a.m. May 19.
SHOPLIFTING
Two women or girls stole various items from the Walgreens at 811 Green Bay Road for a retail theft that had just occurred.
MISSING DISC
A resident in the 1600 block of Walnut Avenue reported around 12:15 p.m. on May 19 that a music compact disc they ordered online was either stolen or never delivered.
PACKAGE PIRACY
A resident in the 400 block of Park Avenue reported that someone stole a package delivered to their front porch between 3:30 and 4 p.m. on May 20.
CAR BURGLARIES
- Someone got into an unlocked car in the 2200 block of Kenilworth Avenue between 6 p.m. May 11 and 9 a.m. May 12. Nothing was listed as stolen at the time of the report.
- Four unlocked cars in the 1000 block of Illinois Road were burglarized between May 11 and May 12. Electronic items were reported stolen from one of them.
- Someone burglarized two unlocked cars in the 2500 block of Thornwood Avenue around 3 a.m. on May 13, stealing a garage door opener from one of them.
- Someone stole cash from inside an unlocked car in the 1400 block of Gregory Avenue between 5 p.m. May 14 and 1 p.m. May 15.
- Someone stole cash from inside an unlocked car in the 2000 block of Kenilworth Avenue between 5 p.m. May 14 and 11:30 a.m. May 15.
- Police were told on May 15 that someone burglarized an unlocked car in the 900 block of Locust Road without stealing anything.
ARRESTS
Charles D. Ryan, 48, of the 400 block of North St. Louis Avenue, Chicago, was arrested around 2 p.m. on May 16 and charged with misdemeanor theft after police were called to the Walgreens, 811 Green Bay Road, for a report that he had stolen various over-the-counter items.
Mansfield Wallace, 48, of the 600 block of Case Street, Evanston, was arrested around 5 p.m. on May 20 following an incident at the Walgreens, 811 Green Bay Road.

WINNETKA
INCIDENTS
WINE THEFT
Someone stole two bottles of wine worth a combined $100 from a porch in the 600 block of Hill Road shortly after 3 p.m. on May 14.
ONLINE SCAM
An Elm Street resident reported on the morning of May 11 that they paid someone $2,600 weeks earlier for the purchase of an unspecified item and never received the item.
STOLEN CAR
Someone stole a car from the 900 block of Cherry Street around 4:15 a.m. on May 15 after rummaging through three cars left unlocked in a driveway and finding car keys in one of them.
CAR BURGLARIES
- Someone burglarized an unlocked car in the 100 block of Church Road between 8:30 p.m. May 11 and 7:30 a.m. May 12.
- Around 12:30 p.m. on May 20, Someone stole two leaf blowers and a landscaping trimmer worth $1,650 from an unlocked trailer parked in the 600 block of Provident Avenue.
- Someone stole a backpack leaf blower worth $450 from an unlocked landscaping trailer in the 900 block of Oak Street between 12:15 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on May 20.
IDENTITY THEFTS
- A Garland Avenue resident reported around 5:30 p.m. on May 12 that someone used their identity to open up an account at Sam's Club and make an unauthorized purchase for an unknown amount.
- A Scott Avenue resident reported that someone used their identity to open up an unauthorized Verizon account between 9 a.m. April 26 and 2:30 p.m. on May 15.
- A Church Road resident reported around 4 someone used their identity to open an unauthorized bank account between May 13 and May 23.
ARRESTS/CITATIONS
Nicholas C. Lykins, 24, of the 1000 block of Tower Road, Winnetka, was arrested around 4 p.m. on May 20 and charged with two counts of retail theft of unspecified items from the Walgreens store at 811 N. Green Bay Road in Wilmette. The charges are connected to earlier incidents, police said.
Rodney Lane, 48, of the 1000 block of Hull Terrace, Evanston, was arrested shortly after 11:45 p.m. on May 20 at the Winnetka Police Department and charged with retail theft in connection with an earlier incident at an unspecified location.
