Nearly 40 Dogs Found Covered in Feces in Glencoe House

Five dogs euthanized, others recovering after Hazmat crews uncovered horrendous conditions.

Hazmat crews removed 37 dogs covered in feces and matted fur, euthanizing five of them, from a Glencoe home Thursday and Friday.

The dogs were taken from a home in the 800 block of Greenwood Avenue during the 13 hours the crews spent there during the two days, according to Chicago Tribune witness accounts.

The dogs all appeared to be related and in such bad shape that crews were unable to see their eyes and ears until they were shaven because so much feces were covering them. Some had lost parts of their tails and ears, but looked like they had been fed.

The home where they were found was described as full of weeds, with a Highgate Builder sign in the front lawn and a tree in the side yard having fallen on the house. Neighbors told the Tribune a woman who appears to be in her 60s lives in the house and records show a 65-year-old woman recently sold the house.

The surviving dogs are being treated at Glencoe Animal Hospital and Preiser Animal Hospital in Northbrook. Most had to be anesthetized before cleaning, which took about two hours per dog, one Glencoe Animal Hospital official said. They appeared very scared and not used to being handled by humans. Two were transferred to Tales of Hope, a no-kill, nonprofit animal rescue and adoption organization in Highland Park.

No one has been charged and police say more information will become available Monday.
