New Trier crews take top spots at Madison regatta

Rowers gain valuable race experience ahead of upcoming Midwest Championships

New Trier rowers took top spots in competitive races at the Monona Sprints in Madison, WI on Sunday, April 24, giving them what Coach Rose Marchuk described as valuable race experience over the 2K distance. “Being pushed from behind by [the other teams] is exactly what these crews need to sharpen their race skills before the Midwestern Championships,” Marchuk said. The championships take place in Columbus, Ohio , on May 14-15.

New Trier raced on Lake Monona on a cold and windy day against Camp Randall Rowing Club, Milwaukee Rowing Club, St. Louis Rowing Club and Twin Cities Youth Rowing Club.

First place spots for New Trier’s Girls went to Girls Varsity 8+, Girls Varsity 4+, Girls 2nd Varsity 4+. Girls Lightweight 4+, Girls Novice 8+ and Girls Novice 8+ (A&B) crews.

New Trier Boys rowing to first place in their races were the Boys 2nd Varsity 8+, Boys 3rd Varsity 8+, Boys Lightweight A 4+, Boys Novice 8+ (A), and Boys Novice 4+ (A).

Coach Sandy Culver praised her Girls Lightweight crews, saying they went into the race “knowing exactly what they wanted to do. They got off the line ahead of the field and maintained their positions, surging even farther ahead with nice strong sprints through the finish line.”

Girls Novice 8+ had a “good race, despite the rough conditions,” Coach Hope Poor said. “They pulled ahead at the start and continued to build their lead to more than a boat length of open water (8 seconds) over second place St Louis.”

The winning Boys 2nd Varsity 8+ crew had a good start, but St Louis held on and did not let go until the New Trier rowers “made a large move at the 1000m and broke contact,” Coach Nate Kelp-Lenane said. “This shell maintained a relatively high stroke rate throughout the course, and made an excellent sprint in the last 350m.”

Coach Matt Clark said his Boys 3rd Varsity 8+ crew “all week had been figuring out how to maintain pressure throughout the entire piece, and more importantly how to get off the line quicker and more efficiently.” Clark said all were very pleased with the start that led to their first-place finish.

Tough weather conditions with wind and wakes provided a “good racing experience” for the Boys Novice squad, Coach Josip Stolar said.
