Northfield Man Charged With Possession Of Child Pornography

A 41-year-old former director of religious education at a suburban parish has been charged with 3 counts of possession of child pornography.

NORTHFIELD, IL — Police said a Northfield man has been accused of possessing child pornography. Carl J. Scheeler, 41, of the 1800 block of Bosworth Lane in Northfield, was arrested around 9 a.m. on Oct. 8 as part of an ongoing investigation, according to Northfield police.

Scheeler was charged with three counts of possession of child pornography. One count involved possession of a video of a child under the age of 13, one for an image of a child under 13 and one for a video of a child under 18.

Police said they were unable to disclose when the investigation began or what prompted it, citing pending court proceedings. Sgt. Michael Hutensky said the investigation has not revealed any known images or videos of any local children.

Scheeler was released on a personal recognizance bond following a bond hearing Oct. 9. He is due back in court on Nov. 8.

Scheeler declined to comment on the advice on his attorney. According to a 2014 Illinois appellate court ruling ordering him to pay his ex-wife's attorney's fees, Scheeler has a master's degree in theology and was formerly the director of religious education at a parish in Elmhurt. After leaving a house Villa Park he owned with his former spouse, with whom he had six children, Scheeler moved in with his mother in Northfield, according to testimony in the case.
