GIRLS’ VARSITY BASKETBALL
North Shore vs. Woodlands Academy, February 3, (W) 55-25
North Shore vs. Chicago Academy High School, February 5, (W) 58-46
North Shore’s girls’ Varsity basketball team ended the regular season at 11-8 with five wins in their last six games, including Tuesday’s 55-25 victory over league rival Woodlands Academy and Thursday’s 58-46 win over Chicago Academy High School, a game they led by 20 points before emptying their bench despite playing without #13 starting point guard Lauren Kaplinsky ’17 Highland Park and #31 starting forward Grace Atia ’17 Kenilworth, who has led the team in scoring in several games.
“Our man-to-man defense has been pretty solid the last month,” said head coach Dana Leonard. “But we need more consistency in our shooting close to the basket. We have, however, had a few girls take their play to the next level in the last couple of weeks so, overall, we are really excited heading into the state playoffs.”
Of recent note, #30 freshman center Grace Kayser ’18 Glencoe dominated the Chicago Academy game with 13 points and 19 rebounds despite playing less than three quarters of the time. Leonard also cited #5 senior leader Annie Kroll ’15 Winnetka whose shooting has returned to her former all-conference form after a two-week slump. “She worked really hard to correct a slight flaw in her release all last weekend and on the snow day,” said Leonard. “Lately she has become an even more versatile ball-handler and defender.” Leonard also praised Kaplinsky’s floor leadership, passing and scoring in the Woodlands game in addition to her on-ball defense.” Kaplinsky, #11 Safia Vohra ’15 Glenview and #24 Olivia Kayser ’17 Glencoe are definitely the best defensive trio of guards in the league,” said Leonard.
The Raiders now prepare to host their own regional as the #2 seed, confident but still worried about the health of Atia, a versatile scorer who is again sidelined by a knee injury and listed as week-to-week. They will first play 3rd seed Chicago Rickover Academy Wednesday February 11 at 7 p.m. Should they win, they will play Friday February 13 at 7 p.m.; most likely against top seed Chicago Math & Science whom they defeated last year. The winner of the North Shore regional then moves on to the Immaculate Conception sectional in Elmhurst to take on the winner of the Chicago Christ The King regional the following Monday, February 16 at 6 p.m.
