Over A Dozen Cars Vandalized In Wilmette Ahead Of July 4: Blotter

Homeless man charged with burglarizing unlocked home; unlicensed driver faces felony DUI charge: New Trier Area Police Blotters

NEW TRIER TOWNSHIP, IL — The following information comes from the Glencoe, Kenilworth, Northfield, Wilmette and Winnetka police departments as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges merely represent accusations by the state, and county prosecutors often choose to drop or reduce them. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless later proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

INCIDENTS

FACEBOOK PHONE SCAM
A Skokie Ridge Drive resident reported on July 8 that someone claiming to be a Facebook representative had convinced them to provide personal information over the phone.

BIKE THEFT
Someone stole a bicycle from the 600 block of Greenwood Avenue between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. on July 9. Police did not specify if the bike, which was valued at $300, was locked at the time.

UNEMPLOYMENT FRAUD
A Lincoln Avenue resident reported that someone had used their identity to apply fraudulently for unemployment insurance benefits in October 2020.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Alberto Sanchez, of the 4700 block of South Karlov Avenue, Chicago, was arrested around 5:30 a.m. on July 7 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol following an encounter with officers near the intersection of Dundee Road and Interstate 94. He was also issued citations for illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol by a driver and improper parking on the roadway.

Andrew Saltarelli, of the 900 block of Heather Road, Deerfield, was arrested around 7:30 p.m. on July 11 at Valor Glencoe, 667 Vernon Ave., and charged with aggravated battery to a police officer, public intoxication and resisting arrest. No further information about the circumstances of his arrest was immediately available from police.

A 22-year-old Cary man was charged with driving with a suspended license and issued an unsafe U-turn citation following an investigation into a traffic crash near the intersection of Randolph Street and Oakdale Avenue around 4 p.m. on July 13.

BIKE THEFT
Someone stole an unlocked bicycle worth less than $300 from behind a house in the 100 block of Abington Avenue at some point between noon on July 3 and noon on July 5.

SHOPLIFTING

  • Police were called to the Wanderlust Eyecare, 1745 Orchard Lane, shortly after 1:30 p.m. on July 7 for a report that a female shoplifter had stolen a pair of sunglasses worth $440 about 10 minutes earlier.
  • A female shoplifter stop about $370 worth of alcohol from the Mariano's, 1822 Willow Road, shortly before 6 p.m. on July 11.
UNEMPLOYMENT FRAUD

A Robin Hood Lane resident reported on July 5 that someone had used their identity to file a fraudulent application for unemployment insurance benefits.

SBA LOAN FRAUD
A Drury Lane resident reported twice on on July 7 that someone had used their identity to take out an unauthorized loan from the Small Business Administration.

CAR THEFT
Burglars broke into Fields Land Rover, 670 W. Frontage Road, at some point prior to 1:30 a.m. July 8 and stole two Jaguars and a Land Rover. The Land Rover and one of the Jaguars was later found in Chicago. No arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

HOME BURGLARY
Someone broke into a home in the 2100 block of Northgate Avenue at some point between 3:45 and 5:30 p.m. on July 8. Police did not specify what, if anything, was reported stolen from inside.

PARKING DISPUTE
Police were called to the 300 block of Wagner Road on July 10 by a homeowner who reported someone parked on the parkway in front of their home and refused to move the car. Officers issued the motorist a citation for improper parking on the parkway and the driver drove away.

NEIGHBOR DISPUTE
Police were called to the 1700 block of Colonial Lane around 2:15 p.m. on July 11 for an argument between neighbors about the placement of plants on a shared patio.

INCIDENTS

UNEMPLOYMENT FRAUD
Two village residents reported their identities had been used to file fraudulently for state unemployment insurance benefits between July 2 and July 9.

VANDALISM

  • At least a dozen cars were found spray-painted between July 2 and July 3, including on Laramie Avenue, Riverside Drive, Illinois Road, Elmwood Avenue, Manor Drive, Frontage Road.
  • On July 3, police noticed the North Branch Road sign was missing at the intersection with Riverside Drive and a street sign had been spray painted in the 800 block of Laramie Avenue.
  • Someone spray-painted a building in the 3600 block of Illinois Road at some point on or before July 3, police were told.

IDENTITY THEFT
Someone used the identity of a Park Avenue resident to file a 2020 income tax return, police were told on July 4.

THEFT
Someone stole an unspecified part from a vehicle parked in the 800 block of Forest Avenue between June 27 and June 28.

HARASSMENT BY PHONE
A resident of the 600 block of Central Avenue reported on July 7 that they had received a phone call that was "harassing in nature."

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Nikolay Radevski, 57, of the 800 block of Forest Avenue, Evanston, was arrested around 3 a.m. on July 4 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater following a traffic stop on the 800 block of Locust Road. He was also ticketed for illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol, improper lane usage, disregarding a traffic control device, disregarding a stop light and speeding. Police reported he produced a sample indicating he had twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

Robert Fleming, 53, with no fixed address, was arrested around 2:30 p.m. on July 6 and charged with residential burglary after a resident told police he walked into and unlocked home in the 200 block of 16th Street and stole unspecified property from within at some point between 8:45 and 11:30 a.m. that morning.

INCIDENTS

CATALYTIC CONVERTER THEFT
Someone stole a catalytic converter from a car parked in a driveway in the 1000 block of Elm Street at some point between midnight and 8:30 a.m. on July 1 for a loss of more than $4,000.

INSTAGRAM SCAM
An Auburn Avenue resident reported on July 6 that someone purporting to be a representative of the social media company Instagram had contacted them on May 15 and requested money to verify the resident's business account. The resident complied and later found their personal accounts were compromised for a loss of $300.

IDENTITY THEFT
An Oak Street resident reported on July 6 that someone had used their identity to open up a credit card account with Home Depot on June 28 and make unspecified unauthorized purchases.

TRESPASSING
Someone got into a home in the 800 block of Prospect Avenue through a window between 11 p.m. July 7 and 5 p.m. July 8.

APPLE SCAM
A caller claiming to represent Apple support scammed a Poplar Street resident out of more than $5,000 via wire transfer on July 10 after convincing the resident that there was fraudulent activity on their account.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

A 67-year-old Riverdale man was arrested around 1 a.m. on July 5 and charged with driving with a suspended license following a traffic stop around Elm Street and Green Bay Road.

Leonardo Escamilla, 34, of the 4700 block of North Central Park Avenue, Chicago, was arrested around 12:30 a.m. on July 8 and charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of alcohol and driving without a license following a traffic stop in the 800 block of Willow Road. He was also issued citations for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and improper lane usage.
