Phony 'Refund' From 'Tech Support' Demands Gift Cards: Blotters
Donuts damage parking lot, suspicious person at salon, identity theft at business: Glencoe, Northfield, Winnetka blotter for Feb. 28–March 6

WINNETKA, IL — The following information comes from the Glencoe, Winnetka and Northfield police departments as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges represent merely accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
WINNETKA
INCIDENTS
IDENTITY THEFTS
- Someone made more than $5,000 in unauthorized purchases and ATM withdrawals from an account of a business in the 900 block of Green Bay Road some time between Jan. 28 and Feb. 15.
- A Hill Road resident reported that someone used their credit card to make several unauthorized purchases totaling more than $3,500 between 12:51 and 3:21 p.m. on Feb. 26.
- A Tower Road resident reported that someone used their identity to open up a fake email account between Feb. 27 and March 2 in an attempt to carry out a fraudulent wire transfer.
ARRESTS
A 41-year-old Park City man was arrested around 1 a.m. on Feb. 27 in the 800 block of Green Bay Road and charged with driving with a revoked driver's license and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. He was also ticketed for speeding.

INCIDENTS
CRIMINAL DAMAGE TO PARKING LOT
Someone caused more than $500 worth of damage to a parking lot in the 1100 block of Sheridan Road while doing "donuts," police were told on 4:30 p.m. on March 1.

TECH SUPPORT SCAM
A Pebblewood Lane resident reported around 7 p.m. on March 1 that someone had called up claiming to be from "Windows support" and wanted to offer a "refund." The caller emailed a form asking for the resident to fill it out. The caller called back and claimed the amount had been mistakenly entered with an extra $4,000. The caller than asked for a credit card number and was convinced to go to a Target store to buy eight $500 gift cards.
ARRESTS
A 21-year-old Morton Grove man was issued citations for possession of drug paraphernalia and speeding shortly after midnight on March 4 following a traffic stop in the area of Hohlfelder Road and Sunset Lane.

NORTHFIELD
INCIDENTS
SUSPICIOUS PERSON
Officers were called to a hair salon in the 200 block of Waukegan Road around 2 p.m. on Feb. 25 for a report that a heavyset man in his 50s suspicious had come into the the business around 9:50 a.m. Police were told he posed in front of a mirror and asked the staff "if they liked his personal style." Officers asked the staff to call right away if he returned.
ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE
A resident in the 100 block of Dickens Road reported at 9 a.m. on Feb. 27 that a lawn had been damaged by vehicles being used for a nearby construction project. The contract told police he would arranged to have the residents's lawn repaired.
CREDIT CARD FRAUD
A Harding Road resident reported on the night of Feb. 27 that someone had used their credit card to make unauthorized purchases for an undisclosed amount.
CAR BURGLARY
Someone burglarized an unlocked car parked at the Mariano's, 1822 Willow Road, around 3:30 p.m. on March 3. Police did not disclose if anything was stolen.
ARRESTS
A 55-year-old Itasca man was arrested at 2:52 p.m. on Feb. 28 and charged with driving 57 mph in a 30 mph zone following a traffic stop in the area of Willow Road and Bracken Lane.
A 25-year-old North Chicago man was arrested at 8:11 a.m. on March 1 and charged with driving without a valid license and with an expired registration following a traffic stop in the area of Willow Road and Bracken Lane.
