Missing Man Found With Gun At Tower Road Beach: Winnetka Police

Officers negotiated the surrender of an armed man who had recently been reported missing by a family member, police said.

WINNETKA, IL — Officers encountered an armed man at Tower Road Beach Thursday shortly after he had been reported missing by a family member, leading to a heavy police response before the man was taken to an area hospital for an evaluation, according to a statement from Winnetka police.

At 6 p.m., police were called to a home for help finding a relative. Shortly before 6:45 p.m., officers found the man in his car, armed with a handgun, according to police.

Sheridan Road and Tower Road were closed to through traffic until further notice, Winnetka police announced on social media around 7:15 p.m.

About 30 minutes later, police said there was no further threat to public safety and roads would be re-opened.

"The matter has been resolved," police tweeted.

The intersection of Tower and Sheridan roads remained closed shortly before 8 p.m., when an ambulance pulled away from the beach on Sheridan Road with its lights illuminated, according to a North Shore Updates photographer.

Images from the scene showed officers in SWAT-style tactical attire armed with rifles and a response from multiple area law enforcement agencies.

"Additional police resources responded to help maintain the safety of the surrounding area. The subject ultimately complied with police direction," according to the Winnetka police statement posted to social media around 9:15 p.m.

"No arrests were made and the matter was resolved without further incident or risk to the community."
