Solicitor Seeks 'Donations'; Damage To Business' Glass: Blotters

A shoplifting arrest, an email scam and a locker room theft on the Glencoe, Northfield and Winnetka police blotters for Dec. 20 to Dec. 26.

WINNETKA, IL — The following information comes from the Glencoe, Winnetka and Northfield police departments as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges represent merely accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

INCIDENTS

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • An Elder Lane resident reported on the afternoon of Dec. 19 that someone had used their identity to
  • A Laurel Avenue resident reported on the afternoon of Dec. 21 that someone had used their identity to obtain an insurance policy, open a Nicor Gas account and try to buy a vehicle between Dec. 4 and Dec. 20. The total loss was not known at the time of the report.
  • A Walnut Street resident reported on the afternoon of Dec. 23 that someone had used their identity between Nov. 26 and Dec. 7 to open various credit card accounts, a self storage account used their Starbucks card without authorization for a loss of nearly $30.

BUSINESS DAMAGED
An employee of a business in the 800 block of Oak Street reported around 7:30 a.m. on Dec. 20 that someone had damaged a glass panel on the front door between 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 19 and 7:30 a.m. on Dec. 20, causing $1,000 in damage.

CAR BURGLARIES

  • Between 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 20 and 2 p.m. on Dec. 21, someone rummaged through a car left unlocked in a driveway in the 1300 block of Scott Avenue. There was no reported loss at the time of the report.
  • Someone stole $5 in cash between 10:30 p.m. on Dec. 21 and 8 a.m. on Dec. 21 from a car parked in a driveway in the 1200 block of Ash Street.
  • Someone stole sunglasses and a coin purse from an unlocked car parked in a driveway in the 1000 block of Pelham Road between 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 21 and 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 22 for a loss of $466.

THEFT
Someone stole a package delivered to a home in the first block of Warwick Road between 7:15 and 7:20 p.m. on Dec. 21 for a loss of nearly $55.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE TO VEHICLE
Someone took a side mirror from a car parked in a driveway in the 700 block of Hill Road between 9 p.m. on Dec. 21 and 8 a.m. on Dec. 22 for a $250 loss.

THEFT
Someone stole a wallet with cash and a driver's permit from a backpack in an unlocked locker at New Trier High School between 3 and 4 p.m. on Dec. 21 for a loss of $920.

ARRESTS

Thomas H. Kemnitz, 20, of the 5800 block of North Winthrop Avenue, Chicago, was arrested around noon on Dec. 19 at the Winnetka Police Department following an investigation into an incident of shoplifting from the Grant Food Center that occurred between Dec. 4 and Dec. 10.

INCIDENTS

MAIL SCAM
An Old Green Bay Road resident reported on the afternoon of Dec. 19 that someone had mailed them a letter requesting the resident contact them to receive money under unspecified circumstances.

SECRETS SCAM
A Green Bay Road resident reported around noon on Dec. 20 that someone had sent them an email demanding a payment in Bitcoin to stop the sender from releasing compromising information. No money was provided.

STOLEN CARS

  • Someone stole an unlocked 2018 Range Rover from the 500 block of Oakdale Avenue sometime prior to 10:30 p.m. on Dec. 21 after a key fob was left inside.
  • Someone stole an unlocked 2017 Acura SUV from the 200 block of Scott Avenue using a key fob that had been left inside sometime prior to 11 a.m. on Dec. 22.

ARRESTS

An 18-year-old Cicero woman was arrested around 1 a.m. on Dec. 22 following a traffic stop near the intersection of Dundee Road and Julia Court and charged with driving with a suspended license and operation of an uninsured motor vehicle. She was also issued citations for illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol, improper lane usage and only one red tail light.

NORTHFIELD

INCIDENTS

ILLEGAL BURNING
Police and firefighters were called around 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 18 to a home in the 2200 block of Winnetka Road for a report of smoke in the area. Officers learned that a nearby homeowner was burning landscape waste in their yard. The fire was extinguished and the homeowner was issued a citation for a violation of the local ordinance prohibiting open burning.

CREDIT CARD FRAUD
Officers were called to a painting company in the 1700 block of Harding Road for a report that a credit card processing company had contacted the business regarding several unauthorized credit card transactions.

DOOR-TO-DOOR DONATION SCAM
A resident in the 300 block of Meadowbrook Drive reported around 11:45 a.m. on Dec. 20 that several weeks earlier they had written a check for a donation to Lambs Farm after an encounter with a solicitor at their front door. The resident later contacted the charity, a Libertyville nonprofit providing services for adults with developmental disabilities, and learned that they do not engage in door to door solicitation.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
A resident in the 200 block of Avon Avenue reported around 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 20 that someone had cut the cord to their holiday lights during the overnight hours.

IDENTITY THEFT
Police are investigating after a Woodland Lane North resident reported on the afternoon of Dec. 20 that someone had stolen their identity.

CAR BURGLARIES
During the overnight hours of Dec. 21 to Dec. 22, someone burglarized unlocked cars in the 200 block of Lockwood Avenue and the 1600 block of Orchard Lane.

SUSPICIOUS PEOPLE/VEHICLES

  • A resident in the 200 block of Regent Wood Road reported a suspicious person around 5:11 p.m. on Dec. 17, but it turned out it was a U.S. Postal Service employee making deliveries.
  • Police were called to the 1600 block of Orchard Lane around 10:15 p.m. on Dec. 22 for a report of a suspicious vehicle, but it turned out it was a car sent by a ride-hailing app to drop off a passenger at a home on the block.

ARRESTS

Robert P. Chez, 47, of the 700 block of 12th Street, Wilmette, was arrested around 1:30 p.m. on Dec. 17 and charged with domestic battery in connection with an incident in the 300 block of Walnut Avenue.

A 19-year-old Chicago man was arrested shortly after 2 a.m. on Dec. 18 and charged with driving with a suspended license, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and driving with registration suspended due to lack of insurance following a traffic stop near the intersection of Willow and Wagner roads. He was also ticketed for speeding.

A 34-year-old Chicago man was arrested around 8 a.m. on Dec. 19 and charged with driving without a valid license and with expired registration following a traffic stop in the area of Willow Road and Bristol Street.
