2 Cars Stolen From Dealerships, Then A Dozen Burglarized: Blotter

DUI with no headlights charge for Crystal Lake man, failed garage burglary: Glencoe, Northfield and Winnetka police blotters Dec. 13-19

WINNETKA, IL — The following information comes from the Glencoe, Winnetka and Northfield police departments as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges represent merely accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

INCIDENTS

CAR BURGLARIES

  • Someone got into an two unlocked car parked in a driveway in the 800 block of Cherry Street between 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 10 and 12:30 a.m. on Dec. 11 and rummaged through their contents. A bag containing various documents and an ash tray was stolen from one of them. They were later found abandoned nearby.
  • Someone rummaged through an unlocked car in the 800 block of Oak Street between 6:45 p.m. on Dec. 10 and 1:41 a.m. on Dec. 11. Nothing was reported stolen.

RETAIL THEFT
Someone stole four bottles of alcohol worth about $184 from a grocery store in the 600 block of Green Bay Road between Dec. 4 and Dec. 10.

HOME BURGLARY
Someone got into an unlocked garage in the 300 block of Birch Street between 6:45 and 7:15 p.m. on Dec. 11 and stole several tools valued at $200.

  • Someone made more than $5,000 in unauthorized purchases on the Nordstrom store credit card of a Hawthorn Lane resident between Dec. 3 and Dec. 4.
  • Someone made several purchases worth more than $1,500 on a Gap store credit card of a Ridge Avenue resident between Oct. 30 and Nov. 15.
  • Someone used the identity of an Asbury Avenue resident to try to open a Chase bank account between Dec. 6 and Dec. 11.
  • Someone used the identity of an Elm Street resident to try to make an online purchase on Dec. 14.
  • Someone used the identity of a Burr Avenue resident to open a Byline Bank account between Oct. 31 and Dec. 17, charging more than $5,000.

GLENCOE

INCIDENTS

THEFT
Police were were told around 4:30 a.m. on Dec. 13 that someone had stolen a prescription and electronic cigarette from a resident in the 1000 block of Edgebrook Lane.

IDENTITY THEFT
Someone used the a stolen identity to obtain $25,500 in funds in Munster, Indiana resident. The charges were later refunded.

BURGLARY
Someone tried to burglarize a garage in the 1600 block of Frontage Road prior to 8:41 a.m. on Dec. 16, but nothing was reported stolen.

ELECTRONIC HARASSMENT
A Park Avenue resident reported on the morning of Dec. 18 that someone had been harassing them repeatedly using multiple social media accounts.

INSURANCE SCAM
An Apple Tree Lane resident reported on the afternoon of Dec. 18 that someone had called purporting to be from a health insurance company. The caller claimed the resident's Blue Cross-Blue Shield insurance was being cut off. A follow up call purporting to be from the Social Security Administration claimed there would be charges filed against the victim. The resident learned the calls were a scam.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Edward S. Mugenyi, 29, of the 5500 block of Rita Avenue, Crystal Lake, was arrested around 3:15 a.m. at Dundee Road and the Edens Expressway and charged with DUI. He was also issued citations for illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol, lack of a rear license plate light, improper lane usage and driving without lights when required.

NORTHFIELD

INCIDENTS

CARS STOLEN FROM DEALERSHIP
Staff at the Fields BMW and Volvo dealerships in the 700 block of West Frontage Road reported on the morning of Dec. 10 that cars had been burglarized and stolen during the overnight hours. The vehicles were later recovered in Chicago and police are continuing to investigate.

BURGLARIES TO UNLOCKED PARKED CARS
On the morning of Dec. 11, police received reports of burglaries during the prior overnight hours to cars in the 2100 block of Drury Lane, the 200 and 300 block of Graemere Street, the 200 block of Bristol Street, the first block of Winfield Drive, the first block of Lagoon Lane, two in the 200 block of Avon Avenue, two in 200 block of Wagner Road and two in the 1600 block of Orchard Lane. That same morning, an Ingram Street resident also reported their unlocked car had been burglarized in mid-July. All cars were reportedly unlocked.

THEFTS

  • An employee of a business in the 700 block of West Frontage Road reported around 1:45 p.m. on Dec. 14 that someone had stolen a hubcap from a parked car.
  • A resident in the 200 block of Bristol Street reported around 7:45 p.m. on Dec. 15 that someone had stolen a package after it was delivered to their home.

ARRESTS

A 53-year-old Murrieta, California man was arrested around 8:30 p.m. on Dec. 10 and charged with driving on a suspended license following a traffic stop in the area of Willow Road and Three Lakes Drive. He was also ticketed for speeding.

A 58-year-old Glenview man was arrested around 1 p.m. on Dec. 12 and charged with driving on a suspended license following a traffic stop in the area of Willow Road and Dickens Street. He was also ticketed for speeding.
