Stolen Car; Scams Attempted; Golf Course Flags Taken: Blotters
Incidents and arrests from the Glencoe, Winnetka, Northfield police blotters for Aug. 9 to Aug. 15

WINNETKA, IL — The following information comes from the Glencoe, Winnetka and Northfield police departments as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges represent merely accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
WINNETKA
INCIDENTS
IDENTITY THEFT
A Hackberry Lane resident reported that between July 1 and Aug. 4 someone had impersonated them in order to open up a credit card account through Walmart. The thief used their identity to make an unauthorized purchase for nearly $1,500 and also tried to open up another credit card account at Home Depot.

STOLEN CAR
Someone stole a locked car from the 200 block of Essex Road between 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 8 and 2:30 a.m. on Aug. 9. The car had an iPhone and golf clubs and the reported loss was more than $5,000.
VEHICULAR TRESPASSING
Someone got into an unlocked car parked in a driveway in the 300 block of Hawthorn Lane and rummaged through its contents during the overnight hours of Aug. 8-9.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
Someone scratched markings into a decorative stone in the 800 block of Oak Street, an employee reported on the morning of Aug. 9. The vandal did about $250 in damage.
VEHICULAR TRESPASSING
Someone got into an unlocked car parked in the 400 block of Sunset Road between 11 p.m. on Aug. 8 and 2:05 p.m. on Aug. 9. The interior was rummaged through but nothing was reported stolen.
THEFT
Someone stole an unattended bicycle worth $380 from the front yard of a home in the 800 block of Locust Street between 6:45 and 7 p.m. on Aug. 10.
CRIMINAL DAMAGE
- Someone did $300 in damage to a car parked in the lot in the 600 block of Lincoln Avenue during the overnight hours of Aug. 11-12.
- Someone damaged a metal gate and several items at a playground in the 800 block of Pine Street between 1:35 and 8 a.m. on Aug. 12.
- Someone used a tree branch to damage a window and an outlet at Crow Island Woods in the 1100 block of Willow Road between Aug. 11 and 13.

THEFT/DAMAGE
Someone damaged a fence and took several flags used for marking holes in the 600 block of Westley Road sometime prior to 5:44 a.m. on Aug. 11. Trespassers reportedly did more than $500 worth of damage was done to the property and stole more than $500.
IDENTITY THEFT
A Strawberry Hill Drive resident reported on the afternoon of Aug. 11 that they had received several credit cards in the mail for which they had never applied.
'SECRETS' SCAM
A resident in the 400 block of Grove Street reported on the afternoon of Aug. 12 that they had received a letter from someone who claimed to have "private information" about them and threatened to disclose it if they were not sent over $9,000 worth of Bitcoin. The resident recognized the scam and did not send any money.
CRIMINAL DAMAGE
Someone at an open house in the 600 block of Greenleaf Avenue broke into several locked drawers prior to 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 13, but nothing was reported stolen.
IDENTITY THEFT
A Sheridan Road resident reported at 8:46 a.m. on Aug. 14 that someone had changed their address on a store credit card before going on to open up another store credit card at Saks Fifth Avenue and change the resident's home address on the LifeLock identity theft prevention service.
ELECTRICITY SCAM
A Park Avenue resident reported on the morning of Aug. 14 that someone had called them claiming to be from ComeEd and threatening to shut off their power if they did not change their account number. The resident realized someone was wrong and hung up.
ARRESTS/CITATIONS
A 51-year-old Chicago man was arrested at 8:10 p.m. on Aug. 8 near the intersection of Bluff Road and Lincoln Avenue and charged with driving without a valid license. He was also ticketed for running a stop sign.
NORTHFIELD
INCIDENTS
VEHICULAR TRESPASSING
Someone got into an unlocked car parked in the 100 block of Riverside Drive during the overnight hours of July 24-25. It was reported to police on the night of Aug. 9.
THREATS
A resident in the 100 block of Riverside Drive reported on the morning of Aug. 10 that they had received threatening text messages from some family members and wanted it documented as a matter of record.
ARRESTS
A 44-year-old Waukegan man was arrested at 4:12 p.m. in the 400 block of Wagner Road and charged with driving with a suspended license. He was also ticketed for operating a vehicle while using an electronic communication device.
A 26-year-old Glenview woman was arrested at 3:27 p.m. on Aug. 10 and charged with driving without a valid license following an investigation into a traffic crash in the area of Winnetka and West Frontage roads on Aug. 9. She was also issued citations for operating an uninsured vehicle and disobeying a stop sign.
Steve Medina, 48, of the 1700 block of McCraren Road in Highland Park, was arrested at 2:46 a.m. on Aug. 12 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop in the area of Old Willow Road and Earl Drive. He was also ticketed for failure to signal and improper lane usage.
John Gately, 66, of the 1000 block of Tower Road, surrendered to police around 10:35 p.m. on Aug. 13 at his home. He was later charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder. Read more...
