Thanksgiving 2018: What's Open, Closed In Winnetka And Glencoe

WINNETKA, IL — Thanksgiving represents a time to gather with family and friends to enjoy a tasty feast and remember everything for which we are grateful. It's also among the busiest travel days of the year, the start of the holiday shopping season and, for some, can present a smorgasbord of stress.
Most families will have the chance to relax after their Thanksgiving meal, perhaps tuning into to some football or taking a post-meal nap. But many Americans, especially for those employed by retailers looking to get a jump on Black Friday sales, must nevertheless work on the holiday.
In Winnetka and Glencoe, many offices will have adjusted hours for the the Thanksgiving holiday. Some, including government buildings and schools, will remain closed on Black Friday. Some businesses have special opening and closing hours during the holiday week. Here's a list of public services, institutions, retailers and restaurant hours for Thanksgiving 2018.

UPDATE: Thanksgiving 2019 Closures And Store Hours For Winnetka, Glencoe
Post Office: Post offices are closed on Thanksgiving but will resume operations on Friday.
Village Hall: Village halls and administrative offices will be closed Thursday, Nov. 22, and Friday, Nov. 23.

Public Libraries: The Winnetka-Northfield Public Library and the Glencoe Public Library will close at 5 p.m. on Nov. 21 and remain closed all day on Nov. 22.
Banks: Most major banks are closed on Thanksgiving Day, and most will open on Friday. Call your branch to verify.
Schools: Public and private schools in Winnetka, Glencoe and Northfield will be closed Nov. 21 to Nov. 23. The New Trier High School 2018 Tri-Ship Tree Sale begins Friday at the Winnetka campus.
Park Districts: The Winnetka Ice Arena is offering a special Turkey Day Skate from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving. Glencoe Park District facilities will be closed Thursday, Nov. 22. On Friday, the Watts Ice Center will celebrate the opening of the season with free rink admission for all.
Santa's Mailbox: Starting Nov. 21, a "magical mailbox" will be placed on the southwest corner of Elm and Chestnut streets near the Winnetka Post Office. Letters to Santa can be dropped off until Dec. 19. Remember to include a name and return address to receive a response.
Garbage Collection: In Glencoe, regular pickups will take place one day later. In Winnetka, Monday & Tuesday collections will be as usual, while scheduled Thursday collections will take place a day early and Friday collections will go ahead normally. In Northfield, scheduled refuse collection for Thanksgiving will be delayed by one day.
Retailers: Nearly 100 national and regional retailers have announced plans to close on Thanksgiving Day. About half of U.S. shoppers dislike or strongly dislike Thanksgiving Day openings, and about a survey favor them according to a survey from a website that tracks Black Friday operations.
Retailers giving their employees the day off include: Abt Electronics, Ace Hardware, Costco, Crate and Barrel , Home Depot, IKEA, Lowe's, Marshalls, Nortdstrom, Petco and T.J. Maxx. National retailers calling staff in to work on the holiday include: Best Buy, Dick's Sporting Goods, DSW, GameStop, Macy's, Old Navy, Sears, Walgreens and Walmart.

As for local shopping centers: Deerfield Towne Center will be closed Nov. 22, and open 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Black Friday, but individual stores could vary so you may want to contact a specific store directly. Northbrook Court's holiday hours run from 6 p.m. to midnight on Thanksgiving and from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Black Friday. Westfield Old Orchard Shopping Center's Thanksgiving hours run from 6 p.m. to midnight, and on Black Friday it is scheduled to open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Lincolnwood Town Center will be open from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Thanksgiving and from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Black Friday.
